Abstract: A method for providing cooling air to the venturi and the combustion chamber in a low NOx emission combustor as used in a gas turbine engine that includes the steps of providing an annular air passage surrounding said combustion chamber and venturi where said cooling air under pressure enters the combustion chamber/venturi near the aft portion of the combustion chamber, passing the air along the combustion chamber, past the venturi where the air exits near the front portion of the convergent area of the venturi. The method prevents any channel/passage cooling air from being received into the combustion chamber, and at the same time, introduces the outlet of the cooling air, after the air has passed over the combustion chamber of the venturi and has been heated, back into the premix chamber thereby improving the efficiency of the combustor while reducing and lowering NOx emission in the combustion process.

Abstract: A system and method for modular control of a multi-fuel turbogenerator include separate controllers for controlling fuel supplied to the combustor and power output from the generator. The power controller generates a fuel command based on the required turbine exhaust temperature, where the fuel command is independent of the particular fuel being used. Fuels may include natural gas, diesel, propane, waste gas, or gasoline, for example. The power controller communicates the fuel command and the airflow or calculated air/fuel ratio to the fuel controller which selects an appropriate mode of operation for the injectors. Injector operating modes include one or more pilot modes where fuel is not mixed with air prior to combustion, and one or more premix modes where fuel is highly mixed with air prior to combustion.

Abstract: Concentric installation of a pilot fuel assembly in an opening in a gas turbine combustor casing is achieved by providing a boss having at least two flat surfaces which are perpendicular to each other on the combustor casing surrounding the opening and a mounting flange having at least two flat surfaces which are perpendicular to each other on the pilot fuel assembly. The pilot fuel assembly is concentrically installed to the combustor casing by inserting the assembly into the combustor casing opening, and moving the pilot fuel assembly as far as it will go in a first direction substantially parallel to one of the flat boss surfaces. The distance between the other flat boss surface and one of the flat flange surfaces is then taken. Next, the pilot fuel assembly is moved in the direction opposite the first direction, at which point, the distance between the same two flat surfaces is again measured.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a miniature thermodynamic device that can be constructed using standard micro-fabrication techniques. The device can be used to provide cooling, generate power, compress gases, pump fluids and reduce pressure below ambient (operate as a vacuum pump). Embodiments of the invention relating to the production of a cooling effect and the generation of electrical power, change the thermodynamic state of the system by extracting energy from a pressurized fluid. Energy extraction is attained using an expansion process, which is as nearly isentropic as possible for the appropriately chosen fluid. An isentropic expansion occurs when a compressed gas does work to expand, and in the disclosed embodiments, the gas does work by overcoming either an electrostatic or a magnetic force.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for facilitating the turning of a key in a keyhole of a lock. The key has a head, an insertion portion and a connecting portion between the head and the insertion portion. The apparatus has a body for gripping by an operator and applying torque to the key. The body has at least a front surface, a back surface, a peripheral edge where the front and back surfaces meet, and a slot extending through the body between the front and back surfaces. The slot is adapted to allow the insertion portion of the key to extend beyond the front surface and engage the connecting portion when the key is inserted through the slot. In this manner, when torque is applied to the peripheral edge by the operator, the torque is transmitted through the body at least to the connecting portion of the key. This facilitates the turning of the key when the insertion portion is in the keyhole of the lock.

Abstract: A system for performing sequential operations on a can body, such as necking the open end of the can body, in which two or more machines, such as die necking machines are, are coupled by a transfer module. The transfer module comprises a multi-pocket wheel that receives can bodies from a multi-pocket discharge wheel of the first necking machine and discharges them to a multi-pocket input wheel of the second die necking machine. The drive motor of one of the necking machines is eliminated, while the drive motor on the other machine is enlarged. A gear on the transfer module couples the gear trains on the first and second necking machines into a common gear train. Thus, the transfer module gear train transfers power from the necking machine having the enlarged drive motor to the necking machine for which the drive motor was eliminated. This enables a single drive motor to entire drive train for both machines.

A backup roll supports the work roll against the strip. A cam roll supports the backup roll and is mounted to a frame with a bracket. A position guide assembly is associated with the backup roll for selectively adjusting a relative position of the backup roll to the cam roll. The position guide preferably comprises a screw and guide pin assembly mounted to the frame and a yoke attached to end portions of a plurality of the backup rolls. The adjusting comprises moving the backup roll relative to the cam roll to avoid undesired wear on only limited portions of the backup rolls.

Abstract: In a method of producing microstructured metal sheets, microstructures are made in a metal sheet surface in a continuous embossing step on one side of the metal sheet, while the surface structure of the other side is essentially not changed. The embossing step is carried out by means of an embossing roller which has a negative of the microstructure to be embossed. The flanks of the microstructure form an angle of at least 5° with respect to the perpendicular line, and the negative contains compensating structures in the regions surrounding the microstructure for rendering the forming uniform along the roller slit.

Abstract: Metal cold-working tooling and a method of employing such tooling. The tooling is used to produce deformation in a workpiece, to provide a selected beneficial residual stress profile in the workpiece, in order to provide high fatigue life structures in a minimum number of manufacturing steps. An indenter is used to coldwork a workpiece, causing dimples in the workpiece. Preferably, the dimples are provided with a shape formed by application of a uniform pressure profile to the workpiece surface. As optimized, a relatively uniform beneficial residual stress profile is provided at both the surface and at the midplane apertures in a workpiece, so as to improve overall fatigue life. Also, an improved indenter tool profile shape is described, having a smoothly curved indenter surface portion. And, the use of consumable lamina wafers provides the benefit of easy application of uniform stress profile to a workpiece.

Abstract: This invention improves on the process of bending in a conventional progressive stamping press a flat laminated metal sheet around a corner edge of a die block to form a generally straight piece-part corner, and comprises the steps of forming extended concavely rounded depressions in the opposite sheet faces at the sheet locations of the intended corner, then locating and clamping the sheet with the depressed regions aligned along a die block corner, and then mechanically bending the sheet with said depressed sheet regions aligned over the die block corner edge. The sheet depressions can be aligned essentially opposite one another, being rounded concavely and of a high width-to-depth ratio and of a depth to reduce the sheet to between 80-30% of its original thickness.
