Abstract: Conductive lap windings are interleaved with conventional loops in the stator of a motor-generator. The rotor provides magnetic induction lines that, when rotated, cut across the lap windings and the loops. When the rotor is laterally displaced from its equilibrium axis of rotation, its magnetic lines of induction induce a current in the interleaved lap windings. The induced current interacts with the magnetic lines of induction of the rotor in accordance with Lenz's law to generate a radial force that returns the rotor to its equilibrium axis of rotation.

Abstract: A new improved system and method for end turn retention for wires on a generator rotor for use in high speed applications such as in aircraft applications. The rotor includes a shaft, spokes, supports, and wire winding coils, and at least one cap device. The spokes extend radially outwardly from the shaft, and each support is positioned on an associated spoke. Each coil wraps around an associated support and spoke. Each cap device is coupled to an end of its associated spoke to prevent the windings from moving radially outwardly while the rotor spins. Each support is coupled to an associated cap device, and includes at its radially inward edge a flange protruding away from the respective spoke. Because of the flange and the cap device, slack of the wire coil between the flange and the associated cap is taken up.

Abstract: This invention provides a novel method and apparatus for the encapsulation of OLEDs. Comparing with the conventional encapsulation, the new process is simple, fast, and low-cost. The key structure is a glass or flexible, UV-transmittable encapsulation plate with a specified pattern of bumping lines, which are substitutes for the expensive covers used in the conventional encapsulation. These bumping lines serve not only as continuous walls for sealing each of the enclosed OLED, but also serve as the spacer between the OLED substrate and the encapsulation plate. In addition, these bumping lines are the canals for confining the encapsulating adhesive both at the time when the adhesive is applied and at the time when the adhesive is pressed against both of the OLED substrate and the encapsulation plate for curing.

Abstract: A plasma display panel for easy fabrication is provided with an improved black stripe structure. The structure eliminates the black stripes on a front substrate, leading to more freedom in material selection without suffering from the known problem of tarnishing of component members. Further, non-discharge spaces are provided in barrier ribs formed on a rear substrate and black material layers functioning as the black stripes are formed in cavities corresponding to the non-discharge spaces. Thus, this structure serves to form the black material layers in a sequential process which is similar to that for forming phosphor layers, thereby allowing the plasma display panel to have excellent contrast without complicating the structure and the fabrication process thereof.

In the sustain periods, the same driving signal is sent to the sustain electrode X as well as the address electrode Ai at the same time to achieve the desired volume discharge effect. Abstract: An emission element enclosed inside an electrodeless lamp 5 is excited by an electromagnetic field of a microwave irradiated from a magnetron 2 for emitting a light from the electrodeless lamp 5. A soft-starting method is provided such that an electric power enough to drive the magnetron 2 is gradually increased. The soft-starting method is to prevent the magnetron from being destroyed caused by a self-heating due to a reflected wave of the microwave and is used when a light begins to be emitted from the electrodeless lamp 5.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for limiting the power rate requirement by electronically advantaging the torque or force of a motor. The method is comprised of a local electrical energy storage reservoir, a function to charge the energy reservoir at a controllable rate, and a power controlled motor driver, and an energy management motion controller. This is an electrical circuit, which achieves a similar ‘speed verses force’ tradeoff as a mechanical reduction transmission. The circuit may be used to move cellular antenna repositioning motors where the motive power source may be less than the continuous rating of the repositioning motor.

Abstract: An excitation circuit for a flux switching motor. The circuit includes a low-value film capacitor across the DC side of a bridge rectifier. A plurality of electronic switches are arranged in an H-bridge configuration for switching current flow through an armature winding of the motor in accordance with a PWM control scheme and single-pulse control scheme controlled by a microcontroller. A start-up diode is placed across the field winding of the motor and is electronically switched out of the circuit after a startup phase of the motor has completed. The circuit implements armature energy recirculation through the field winding during startup to promote more uniform and quicker startup of the motor. The use of a film capacitor improves the power factor of the circuit, helps to eliminate the introduction of harmonics into the AC voltage source, and helps in mitigating EMI. Reverse commutation is used to bring the motor to a quick stop when it is powered off.

Abstract: A system and method of controlling airflow within an air delivery system. The method begins by identifying and measuring a particular air conditioning system's blower characteristics. A mathematical relationship for finding a particular CFM based on torque and speed is developed utilizing several discrete airflows within regions or bins within a designated range. The mathematical model is employed by a controller of the air conditioning system for controlling CFM. Additionally, the method may optionally change from an airflow control mode to a blower speed or torque control mode when restrictions are placed upon the air conditioning system.

Abstract: A system and method for predicting mechanical failures in machinery driven by induction motors by using the motor as a diagnostic tool to detect present mechanical disturbances. The motor is monitored during operation to avoid down-time. The motor's torque fluctuations are used as an indicator of early-stage mechanical failures in the machinery. The motor's torque fluctuations are determined using indirect sensing techniques that are less expensive and less intrusive than previously known. More specifically, torque is derived from easily and inexpensively measurable parameters, such as motor slip and phase angle. Current operation is compared to known normal operation. Variations of the motor's characteristics from the known baseline indicate an actual or approaching mechanical failure. “Experimental Fractals” are disclosed that visually represent a current state of the monitored machinery and allow for visual comparison to a baseline for detection of mechanical failures.
