Abstract: An apparatus and method for distributing wear over a plurality of elements on a rotating member. In the case of a cutoff or perforation roll, a plurality of retractable cutoff or perforation blades can be actuated to be extended or retracted to selectively cut or perforate a web. To distribute blade wear, extended blades are occasionally retracted while other blades are extended. Where it is desired to continue producing cuts or perforations of a desired length through such blade indexing, the spacing and number of blades before and after indexing are preferably the same. Most preferably, each blade retracted during indexing is replaced by a blade on the same side of and at the same distance from the blade being retracted. To hold the web during web cutting or perforating operations, the roll is preferably provided with vacuum apertures to which is supplied vacuum via vacuum lines, vacuum valves, and a vacuum source, thereby creating suction through the vacuum apertures.

  • Publication number: 20030045419
Abstract: A centrifuge having a rotating frame, which is rotatably mounted on a stationary frame, and a separation unit mounted on the rotating frame, rotating about a central axis of rotation in the same direction of rotation as the rotating frame but at twice the rotational speed. A line for supplying and/or removing a fluid is connected to the separation unit and is guided in a loop about the separation unit to a stationary tie-in point. To support the line, at least one guide element having a bearing surface for the line is provided. The bearing surface of the guide element is formed by a rotating planar curve, where the radius of the respective circle of curvature contacts the curve at a point and increases with increasing distance between the contact point and the central axis of rotation. With this contour, abrasion over the entire contact surface is largely uniform, which thereby lengthens the lifetime.

Abstract: A method for the treatment of cancer is disclosed which is capable of directing supra-lethal doses of radiation, called Hot-Spots, virtually exclusively to the cancer. The present invention involves a multi-step therapy process and includes a class of novel chemical agents. In accordance with the present invention, it was discovered that soluble precipitable materials can be made to accumulate as non-digestible precipitates in the extra-cellular fluid in the cancer region as a result of non-mammalian enzyme action. Precipitate accumulation is achieved by the prior administration of a bispecific reagent with a non-mammalian enzyme moiety and a targeting agent capable of binding to non-endocytosing receptors of target cancer cells.

Abstract: This invention is directed to the use of novel methods and nitroxide compositions having high redox activity to treat diseases and conditions related to free radicals. The compositions and methods described include pro-drug forms of nitroxide that enhance the therapeutic effect through their ability to penetrate readily into skin cells and remain sequestered within the cells. The formulations and methods described herein result in a significant accumulation of nitroxides in the skin cells, thus achieving a targeted delivery of a therapeutic or diagnostic dose. Applications using the novel compositions and methods described herein include use as improved imaging agents and as improved topical agents for treating conditions of the skin, including aging of the skin, wrinkles caused by sun-exposure, skin cancer, burns, psoriasis and alopecia, among others.
