  • Patent number: 6540896
Abstract: Microfluidic devices and systems for affecting the serial to parallel conversion of materials introduced into the device or system. Material or materials to be converted from a serial orientation, e.g., a single channel, into a parallel orientation, e.g., multiple channels, are introduced into an open chamber or field in which containing flows of materials maintain the cohesiveness of the sample material plugs serially introduced into the open chamber. The sample material or materials are then redirected in the chamber toward and into a plurality of parallel channels that also communicate with the chamber.

  • Patent number: 6540897
Abstract: A method is disclosed for the detection of a His-tagged target biomolecule while said molecule remains in the gel in which it has been separated from other constituents by electrophoresis. The method involves, while the separated His-tagged biomolecule remains in the gel, forming a chelate between the His-tagged molecule, a lanthanide metal ion which exhibits fluorescence, and a sensitizer which enhances the fluorescence of the ion. The gel is then exposed to a u.v. light source to thereby generate a fluorogenic signal indicating the presence of the chelate and, in turn, the His-tagged biomolecule. The fluorogenic signal can then be detected either by direct visualization and/or by other means, such as photographically, e.g., film or charged coupled device (CCD) imaging.

  • Patent number: 6540907
Abstract: Savings in the processing of a naphtha boiling range feed containing a thiophene are achieved by fractionating the feed stream in a single dividing wall column to yield a C6-minus overhead stream, a side-draw containing the majority of the C6 and C7 paraffins and olefins, and a bottoms stream comprising C7 and heavier hydrocarbons. A dividing wall column provides better control of the concentration of both thiophene and toluene in the side-draw. Less of the valuable naphtha is lost and the amount of thiophene in the overhead product is minimized.

  • Patent number: 6540924
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and a device for treating liquids, such as wastewater. According to the invention the liquid is transported by help of a pump (10) from the lower area of a tank (1) through a vertically directed pipe (3) up to a 180 degree bend (5) located above the water surface and where air is sucked in through openings in the bend. The air-liquid mixture is then guided through a second pipe (6) having its outlet (7) close to the tank bottom (2). In this area the flow is once more linked 180 degrees and is directed through a third pipe (8) ending close to the water surface. Thanks to the linking through the pipe (8), a decrease of the static head is obtained against which the pump (10) operates.

  • Patent number: 6540928
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating an electroplating mask for the formation of a miniature magnetic pole tip structure. The method incorporates a silylation process to silylate photoresist after creating a photoresist cavity or trench in the electroplating mask. The silylation process is performed after a dry etch of the photoresist. Alternatively, silylation is performed after a lithographic patterning of the trench. As a result of chemical biasing, the vertical side walls of the photoresist layer shift inward creating a narrower trench. The resulting structure formed after electroplating has a width of less than 0.3 micrometers. This structure can be used as a magnetic pole of a thin film head (“TFH”) for a data storage device.

  • Patent number: 6540931
Abstract: When iron group, especially high nickel, metal alloys that contain substantial amounts of copper are pickled, a displacement coating of copper that is called a “copper kiss” often forms on the pickled surface from the dissolved copper ions in the pickling solution before the pickling solution can be rinsed away. Traditionally this has been removed by treatment with aqueous ammonia, an annoying and potentially hazardous reagent that in many instances requires expensive pollution abatement devices. In this invention, copper kiss is equally effectively removed by treatment with a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, optionally also containing hydrofluoric acid.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of CF3CF═CF2 is disclosed. The process involves contacting 2,3-dichloro-1,1,1,2,3,3-hexafluoropropane with at least 0.1 mole of hydrogen in a reaction vessel of titanium, nickel or iron or their alloys, which is either empty or packed with particles or formed shapes of titanium, nickel or iron or their alloys, at a temperature within the range of from about 350° C. to about 600° C. and for a time sufficient to produce hexafluoropropene. Also disclosed are compositions which comprise hydrogen fluoride in combination with an effective amount of CClF2CClFCF3 to form an azeotrope or azeotrope-like composition with hydrogen fluoride. The compositions contain from about 8.7 to 33.6 mole percent CClF2CClFCF3.

Abstract: A CMP oxide slurry includes an aqueous solution containing abrasive particles and two or more different passivation agents. Preferably, the aqueous solution is made up of deionized water, and the abrasive particles are a metal oxide selected from the group consisting of ceria, silica, alumina, titania, zirconia and germania. Also, a first passivation agent may be an anionic, cationic or nonionic surfactant, and a second passivation agent may be a phthalic acid and its salts. In one example, the first passivation agent is poly-vinyl sulfonic acid, and the second passivation agent is potassium hydrogen phthalate. The slurry exhibits a high oxide to silicon nitride removal selectivity.
