Abstract: A variable valve timing controller has a housing having a hole in its surface facing a vane rotor. A fitting ring is press-fitted into the hole. A stopper piston prevents relative rotation between the vane rotor and the housing by engaging with the fitting ring. The hole is formed with a part non-contacting with the fitting ring near a through hole, in which a camshaft is inserted, of the housing. Since the fitting ring is apart from the inner surface of the non-contacting part when the fitting ring is press-fitted, little or no stress arises around the non-contacting part near the through hole. Therefore, deformation of the through hole is prevented and sliding friction between the inner periphery of the through hole and the camshaft is minimized.

Abstract: An engine employs a dual mode combustion process including a first combustion mode for light loads utilizing premixed charge forced auto ignition (PCFA) wherein a pulse jet of reacting fuel mixture from a prechamber mixes with an ultra dilute premixed fuel-air charge in a main chamber, causing rapidly expanding combustion that ignites the remaining ultra dilute mixture by compression ignition. This improves efficiency, allows combustion phasing control and reduced NOx emissions. For higher speeds and loads, a conventional second combustion mode is utilized wherein a strong premixed mixture is ignited conventionally with spark ignition and/or pulse jet ignition. Cylinder pressures which would result from compression ignition at the higher speeds and loads are thus reduced providing overall engine operation with reduced emissions, improved fuel economy, and reduced noise through improved control of the combustion process.

Abstract: An electronic engine control unit for a motorcycle or other two-wheeled vehicle gradually decreases engine torque at the time of a failure so as to eliminate an uneasy feeling that an operator might experience if the engine torque were to be reduced abruptly. When a failure is detected, a throttle valve is closed gradually by initially closing the valve quickly and then slowly closing the valve so as to obtain a smooth decrease in engine torque. In addition, the ignition timing is changed gradually toward retardation to gradually decrease engine torque. Alternatively, the ignition pulses to the cylinders are thinned out gradually to cause a gradual decrease in engine torque. Abstract: An arrow rest for use with an archery bow. The arrow rest includes a shelf mountable to a bow for shelf orientation transverse to an arrow flight direction; one or more launcher arms affixed to the shelf for transverse windage adjustment; and an arrow glide supported by the launcher arm(s) arranged to support an arrow. The arrow rest may, in part, be assembled in a tool-free operation to create a self-biased friction fit between a launcher arm and the shelf. A resilient portion of the arrow rest absorbs arrow vibrations to reduce noise and improve arrow flight.

Abstract: A band saw with a complex coordination of a tilting motion and a translational motion between the workpiece and the band saw blade, so that a curved cut is made in the workpiece. The geometric parameters of the cut can be continuously adjusted. This makes it possible to optimize a contact length of the saw blade in the workpiece, which is an important factor in the cutting process. It is thus possible to saw workpieces made of stone and similar materials that are typically difficult to cut. The cut and the contact length of the saw blade can be tailored individually to each workpiece to be sawed. Thus, workpieces of different geometrical dimensions and different material properties, in particular with different material hardnesses, can be processed using the band saw according to the invention without having to undertake significant changes.

The valve system is configured to prevent or impede respiratory gases from flowing into the lungs for at least some time such that the intrathoracic pressure is less than atmospheric pressure. A drug is introduced into the patient, and the intrathoracic pressure is lowered using the valve system to cause blood to flow into the thorax and thereby increasing vital organ perfusion to enhance the circulation of the drug.

Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention comprises a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask that incorporates a series of physiologic sensors. These physiologic sensors are mounted on the interior of the SCBA mask in such a way as to contact the facial skin of an individual wearing the mask. The physiologic sensors monitor, among other things, heart rate and carbon monoxide and oxygen saturation levels. The physiologic sensors are connected to a transmitting apparatus attached to the SCBA. The SCBA transmitter sends output data from the physiologic sensors to a remote processor. The SCBA transmitter also sends location information of the individual wearing the SCBA mask to the remote processor. The remote processor compiles the physiologic and location data for the wearer of the SCBA and transmits a signal back to the SCBA receiver which, in turn, sends a signal to a display integrated into a SCBA mask. The display indicates to the individual his physiologic status.

Abstract: A hand-held breathing device for use by patients having respiratory problems creates a sealed backpressure in the airways of the patient by creating resistance to exhalation. A peep valve is mounted inside a hollow body, and a pre-set compression spring is mounted between the valve and an adjustable cap or cam lever in the main body of the device. A pair of valve openings extend through the wall of the main body, one opening serving as an intake port for inhaling of air by the patient and the second port—for exhalation of carbon dioxide. An intake valve is mounted inside the body between a normally open end of the device and the exhalation valve. Abstract: A tracheal tube ventilation apparatus to more effectively remove expired gases. In one preferred embodiment, one or more leak holes are created in the side walls of an endotracheal tube so that expired gases can leak out of the endotracheal tube above the larynx, such as into the back of the mouth (i.e., oropharynx). Each leak hole might advantageously have a diameter between 0.5 and 4.0 mm. In another preferred embodiment, a tube is attached to a proportionately larger leak hole (e.g., up to 8.0 mm) so that the expired gases can be directed away from the leak hole to a specific location, such as directed out of the mouth. In the case of mechanically controlled ventilation, a positive end expiratory pressure can be applied to this tube to mechanically assist with the process of exhaling. In each of these embodiments, it is preferred, but not required, that the endotracheal tube be an ultra-thin walled, two stage tube so as to further assist in the reduction of resistance to the flow of oxygen/air.
