Abstract: An internal combustion engine (1), in particular for a motor vehicle, is described, in which fuel may be injected into a combustion chamber (4) during an intake phase in a first mode of operation or during a compression phase in a second mode of operation, and in which exhaust gases may be sent to a catalytic converter (12). A control unit (18) determines a temperature difference between an actual exhaust gas temperature and a setpoint exhaust gas temperature at an operating point having a low exhaust gas temperature. In addition, at least one additional injection after combustion is implemented by the control unit (18) as a function of the temperature difference.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a lean-burn internal combustion engine in cooperation with an exhaust gas purification system having a three-way catalyst and a NOx trap located downstream of the three-way catalyst includes a controller which calculates current levels of tailpipe NOx during lean engine operating conditions based upon the difference between a determined instantaneous feedgas NOx concentration and a determined instantaneous trap efficiency. The controller discontinues lean engine operation when the tailpipe NOx, expressed in terms of either grams-per-mile or grams-per-hour, exceeds a predetermined threshold level, either instantaneously or as averaged over the course of a trap purge-fill cycle.

  • Publication number: 20030115859
Abstract: The invention provides low temperature NO2 trap compositions useful for adsorbing NO2 from a gas stream at lower temperatures, and releasing the NO2 at higher temperatures. The low temperature trap compositions are useful for incorporation into a diesel exhaust system equipped with a soot filter. The NO2 from the diesel exhaust can be stored when the exhaust temperature is cool, e.g., during startup and at times of low load, and released when the exhaust is at higher temperatures. The released NO2 serves as an effective oxidant for the combustion of soot deposited on the soot filter. These temperatures are significantly lower than those required for the combustion of soot using O2 as an oxidant. The methods of the invention thereby provide a method for regenerating the soot filter within operating temperature ranges typical of diesel engine exhaust systems.

Abstract: Stranded natural gas is sometimes liquefied and sent to other countries that can use the gas in a transport ship. Conventional receiving terminals use large cryogenic storage tanks to hold the liquefied natural gas (LNG) after it has been offloaded from the ship. The present invention eliminates the need for the conventional cryogenic storage tanks and instead uses uncompensated salt caverns to store the product. The present invention can use a special heat exchanger, referred to as a Bishop Process heat exchanger, to warm the LNG prior to storage in the salt caverns or the invention can use conventional vaporizing systems some of which may be reinforced and strengthened to accommodate higher operating pressures. In one embodiment, the LNG is pumped to higher pressures and converted to dense phase natural gas prior to being transferred into the heat exchanger and the uncompensated salt caverns.

Abstract: Refrigerant freezeout is prevented by the use of a controlled bypass flow that causes a warning of the lowest temperature refrigerant in a refrigeration system that achieves very low temperatures by using a mixture of refrigerants comprising at least two refrigerants with boiling points that differ by at least 50° C. This control capability enables reliable operation of the very low temperature system.

Abstract: A pull-down control algorithm for an HVAC refrigeration system is provided. The control algorithm utilizes a fuzzy logic methodology to automatically adjust a flow of refrigerant in the system during a pull-down to maintain a desired pull-down rate. The desired pull-down rate is decreased proportionately as the temperature of the fluid being pulled down approaches a desired operating setpoint to avoid or minimize any overshoot of the operating setpoint. The desired pull-down rate is obtained by adjusting a rate sensitivity factor used in the control algorithm. When the temperature of the fluid being pulled down is above a predetermined value from the operating setpoint, the control algorithm uses a fuzzy logic methodology to determine a rate sensitivity that results in the desired pull-down rate that approaches the operating setpoint without overshoot.

Abstract: A refrigerant circuit for a motor vehicle air-conditioning system has a refrigerant compressor, a cooler connected downstream of the refrigerant compressor, a restrictor for expanding the refrigerant, and an evaporator for transferring heat to the refrigerant. Pressure in the refrigerant circuit is measured firstly on the high-pressure side and secondly on the low-pressure side. An air-conditioning system can be driven directly or indirectly by the motor vehicle driving engine. The refrigerant in the refrigerant circuit is almost completely liquefied upstream of the restrictor, so that it is easy to determine the refrigerant mass flow. As a result, it becomes possible to determine the compressor torque which is consumed by the refrigerant circuit and to control the motor vehicle driving engine accordingly.

Abstract: An air conditioning system for cooling a vehicle passenger compartment is disclosed. The system includes an air duct, a refrigerant circuit, a variable displacement compressor, and a controller. The air duct directs air conditioned air into the vehicle passenger compartment. The refrigerant circuit circulates a refrigerant, wherein a first portion of the circuit is exposed to the air duct and a second portion of the circuit is exposed to air external of the vehicle passenger compartment. The variable displacement compressor is in fluid communication with the refrigerant circuit, wherein the compressor has a control valve for regulating refrigerant flow between a compressor crankcase and a compressor discharge chamber and between the compressor crankcase and a compressor suction chamber. The controller in electrical communication with the variable displacement compressor for controlling refrigerant flow and a displacement of the compressor by actuating the control valves.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a defroster for an evaporator of a refrigerator. A defrosting heater 34 is installed close to a refrigerant tube 32 in which a refrigerant flows. The defrosting heater 34 is constructed to generate different amounts of heat according to positions in an evaporator 30. To this end, a hot wire 44 of the defrosting heater 34 has different wound pitches according to the positions in the evaporator 30. For example, the pitch of the hot wire 44 on an inlet side through which air that has circulated in the refrigerator is introduced toward the evaporator 30 is set to be small in order to generate a relatively large amount of heat. Since air that has circulated in a refrigerating chamber of the refrigerator entrains a relatively large amount of moisture, the pitch of the hot wire 44 is relatively small at a region in the evaporator 30 by which air that has circulated in the refrigerating chamber passes.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing a multi-stage compression type rotary compressor which can avoid the replacement of parts to be used as much as possible to reduce costs and also which enables easily setting an appropriate displacement volume ratio while preventing-the compressor from being increased in size. The gist of the present invention is that an inner diameter of a lower cylinder is altered without altering its thickness (or height), and a displacement volume ratio between first and second rotary compression elements is set to an optimum value in accordance with the alteration.
