  • Patent number: 6598423
Abstract: A liquefaction system includes a source tank containing a supply of liquid nitrogen with a head space there above filled with nitrogen vapor. A pump transfers the liquid nitrogen to a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger also receives natural gas that has been processed in a purifier. The natural gas is liquefied by free cold from the liquid nitrogen so that liquid natural gas (LNG) is produced. The LNG travels to an LNG destination tank for storage and/or transport. The liquid nitrogen is vaporized in the heat exchanger. The resulting nitrogen gas is directed to a process system that may include, for example, cylinders for welding or other applications. Between liquefaction cycles, the purifier is regenerated by a vacuum and nitrogen vapor from the head space of the source tank. Steel shot is mixed with absorbent in the purifier so that the absorbent is cooled for increased performance.

  • Patent number: 6598450
Abstract: An internally cooled punch disposed on the end of a ram in a can forming machine. Internal fluid cooling means in the ram avoids the need for externally applied cooling fluids. A plurality of parallel fluid transfer tubes is arranged annularly within the ram. Cooling medium flows through inlet tubes to radial inlet ports which supply the cooling medium to the inner surface of the punch where the medium flows rearwardly through a channel at the inner surface of the punch to radial outlet ports leading to outlet tubes through the ram. Discharged cooling media flows back along the ram and out through a manifold. The transfer tubes are arranged symmetrically in an alternating array circumferentially around the ram to reduce radial temperature gradients within the ram. A central port allows air flow through the ram to aid in stripping the formed container from the punch.

  • Patent number: 6598459
Abstract: The artificial olfactory system is an ultra-sensitive and selective odor sensing system for the detection of odorant molecules down to the part per trillion level. The system includes multiple ultra sensitive frequency sensors, such as sensors based on piezoelectric substrates or micro-machined resonators, capable of detecting frequency changes resulting from the interaction of odorant molecules with the sensor. A coating applied to the sensor greatly increases the surface of interaction between the odorant molecules or biological agents and the sensor. An array of these sensors, each responding to the interaction of an odorant molecule species but in a different manner, results in different frequency shifts. An ultra sensitive frequency measurement device measures as small as part per billion shift in frequency.

Abstract: An inlet system is used in conjunction with a standard gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer to facilitate the analysis of volatile components of substances fired from inkjet pens. The system allows for the investigation of changes in the ink resulting from resistor firing. In addition, the system can be used as a diagnostic tool to detect failures in individual firing chamber. After a block is cooled with liquid nitrogen, an analyte sample of ink is deposited on a stage in a chamber in the block and the chamber is then sealed. The stage is then heated vaporizing a portion of the analyte sample. A transfer gas passes over the stage and mixes with vaporized analyte. The mixture then enters a gas chromatography mass spectrometer which determines the analyte sample's components and relative amounts thereof.
