    Abstract: Routers for trunk telecommunication systems currently operate at 2.5 Gb/s. Next generation routers will be requires to switch 128 input data streams into 128 output data streams, each data stream being at a data rate of 10 Gb/s. Current routers employ massively parallel electronic switches to route data at 1.25 Gb/s. Such technology is reaching its limit and a new approach to high-speed switching is required. The present invention provides an apparatus and method for enabling such high-speed switching by providing a data compression apparatus which comprises a pulsed chirped laser (226) coupled to a modulator (218, 220), the modulator (218, 220) being coupled to a multiplexer (232) and a compressor (228). A chirped laser pulse having the duration of a data packet is modulated with data received on an input channel and then passed through the multiplexer (232) and the compressor (228) in order to generate a compressed modulated data pulse for high speed switching.

    Abstract: An oscillating microscopic or tomographic optical input image is directed at a tunable Bragg cell and a tuning control device applies a fluctuating AC hetrodyne signal to the cell, such signal having a phase locked template with respect to oscillation of the optical image, causing the cell to hetrodyne and correlate a phase locked matching template with the oscillating optical input image. A time integrating detector integrates output signals from the Bragg cell while illuminated point sources of the optical image are interconnected with corresponding imaging points upon the integrating detector via a high resolution holographic lens array within the Bragg cell. The array consists of recorded interference patterns between tiny one micron point sources of light produced by an optical fiber with broad wave fronts of light. A DC signal applied to the Bragg cell along with the AC signal enables beneficial wavelength discrimination and averaging.

Also disclosed are the attachment in combination with a drainage hose and a stockpiling barge, a method of filtering runoff water from a stockpiling barge through the use of the attachments, and a method of preventing non-dissolved organic or inorganic contaminants from flowing from a stockpiling barge into a body of water through the use of the attachments.

    Abstract: A method for installation of an underground pipe includes an initial step of boring a pilot hole through the ground at a predetermined grade angle by extending a drill string having a steerable boring bit mounted thereon through the ground.
