  • Patent number: 6674767
Abstract: A flexible gateway accommodates data transfer from a data origination device over a wide variety of networks to a wide variety of destination devices, even if those networks use different protocols, and even if the devices recognize different data formats. Thus, the gateway can perform work previously requiring numerous gateways. After the gateway receives information from a data source, the gateway identifies the specific device type and the specific network type to which the information is to be routed. The gateway then calls device and network drivers associated with the specific device and network identified with the destination device. These drivers then manipulate the data using the device driver into the format recognized by the destination device, and then provide the manipulated data to the destination device over the identified network using the compatible protocol. Thus, the destination device properly receives and interprets the information provided by the data source.

  • Patent number: 6674768
Abstract: A data transmission device for executing data transmission in environments where the noise level changes periodically minimizes delay of fast data. A multiplexing/synchronization control section receives data (in which the ratio between fast data and interleave data is fixed) which are supplied from an upper layer device at a prespecified data rate, and separates the data into fast data and interleave data. The fast data is supplied to a tone ordering section without changing its data rate. Meanwhile, an interleaving section executes interleaving to the interleave data, and a rate converter controls the data rate of the interleave data and supplies the interleave data to the tone ordering section.

  • Patent number: 6674769
Abstract: A network switch, configured for performing layer 2 and layer 3 switching in an Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) network without blocking of incoming data packets, includes network switch ports, each including a policy filter configured for obtaining layer 3 and layer 4 information from a received layer 2 frame. The layer 3 information and the layer 4 information are used to determine a policy identifier that specifies a layer 3 switching operation to be performed on the received layer 2 frame. Each network switch port also includes a policy cache that caches portions of the layer 3 information and the corresponding policy identifier. The policy filter and the policy cache are then simultaneously searched for subsequent layer 3 frames to find the appropriate policy; if the appropriate policy is located in the policy cache, the searching operation is completed, enabling the network switch port resources to begin searching operations for another packet.

  • Patent number: 6674772
Abstract: In a data communication circuit, data is multiplexed onto a communication link through multiple multiplexer stages and demultiplexed from the communication link through multiple demultiplexer stages in order that a clock signal applied to each multiplexing circuit need only be precisely distributed to a limited, high frequency portion of the circuit. Each circuit is clocked by a multiplying delayed locked loop bit clock generator. Where the number of parallel bits in the signal between the two stages is greater than two, the higher frequency stage coupled to the communication link is clocked by an N-phase overlapping clock. In the case of a multiplexer, the intermediate frequency signal is enabled in the higher frequency data multiplexer by concurrence of two clock phases.

  • Patent number: 6674773
Abstract: A multi-wavelength Raman laser comprising a Raman fiber forming part of an optical ring, preferably most parts of which are formed by optical fiber. The ring includes a periodic filter selectively transmitting optical power at a number of equally spaced wavelengths corresponding to the wavelengths of the laser output. Radiation at the signal wavelengths propagating in one direction on the ring is tapped onto an output fiber. An optical isolator is formed either in the ring or fiber tapped into the ring to suppress radiation propagating in the reverse direction on the ring. A frequency shifter may be inserted into the loop to prevent power from concentrating in a single mode, thereby allowing wide band lasing. A band pass filter may be inserted into the loop to restrict the lasing band.

  • Patent number: 6674788
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communication data signal blocking for a base radio control station (RCS) which wirelessly communicates with subscriber units (SUs) via a spread spectrum communication system is disclosed. A transmitter sends signals as a baseband combined signal over global and assigned channels to SUs. The SUs are set to initial power levels and the power levels are adjusted in advance of receiving signals on assigned channels. The power levels are combined to define an RCS transmitter power level, which is preferably a root mean square value of the baseband combined signal. The transmission power levels are adjusted in response to corresponding power control signals received from the SUs. Transmission of a new communication data signal on an assigned channel is blocked if a predetermined RCS transmitter power level limit is reached before commencing transmission of that signal.

Abstract: A system and method for enabling a transmitter employing signal spreading techniques to increase the data rate of the transmitted modulated signal without reducing the multi-path delay spread. Specifically, the system and method use concatenated spreading sequences to provide data modulated spread signals having increased data rates with extended multi-path delay spread. The system and method therefore removes the one-to-one relationship between the repetitive spreading code length and maximum multi-path delay spread of a data modulated spread signal, to thus increase the data rate for a given multi-path delay spread while preserving the autocorrelation and cross-correlation properties of the individual spreading sequences.

  • Patent number: 6674792
Abstract: A receiver includes inversely spreading circuit, a RAKE synthesizing circuit, a noise measuring circuit, a weighting circuit and a decoder. The inversely spreading circuit inversely spreads a reception signal for every path using a spreading code to produce path data signals for paths. The RAKE synthesizing circuit synthesizes the path data signals to output a RAKE synthesis signal while carrying out a weighting operation for every path such that the RAKE synthesis signal has a maximum S/N ratio. The noise measuring circuit measures a noise level of each of the path data signals, and calculates a total noise amount for the paths from the measured noise levels. The weighting circuit carries out a weighting operation of the RAKE synthesis signal based on the total noise amount to produce a weighted signal such that a time change of distortion in the RAKE synthesis signal is cancelled. The decoder decodes the weighted signal to produce an information sequence.

  • Patent number: 6674794
Abstract: A system and method for adjusting the phase of the analog signal produced by an analog modem connected to a digital modem over a telephone network. The digital portion of the telephone network is locked to the network clock, and the modems have no control over the sampling timing or rate as the analog signal is sampled and quantized by a codec. If the analog signal is shifted in phase relative to the network clock, then the codec may be sampling at unresolvable points on the analog signal, thereby causing errors and a decrease in the usable bandwidth for transmitting data. The analog modem symbol frequency is locked to the clock of the digital network using loop-back timing. A phase estimate is computed using the quantized samples of a known reference signal. Next, a “phase offset” is calculated by comparing the phase estimate to an optimum phase value. Then the digital modem sends the calculated phase offset information to the analog modem.

Abstract: A system, device, and method for time-domain equalizer (TEQ) training determines the TEQ order and TEQ coefficients by applying the multichannel Levinson algorithm for auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) modeling of the channel impulse response. Specifically, the TEQ is trained based upon a received training signal. The received training signal and knowledge of the transmitted training signal are used to derive an autocorrelation matrix that is used in formulating the multichannel ARMA model. The parameters of the multichannel ARMA model are estimated via a recursive procedure using the multichannel Levinson algorithm. Starting from a sufficiently high-order model with a fixed pole-zero difference, the TEQ coefficients corresponding to a low-order model are derived from those of a high-order model.

Abstract: A statistical multiplexing apparatus and method for encoding and combining a diversity of video signal resolutions and formats. Higher resolution signals are reduced to lower resolution signals for simplifying the a priori statistics gathering process. Alternately, input video signals in multiple formats are converted to a single common format prior to their application to an a priori statistics gatherer. A storage device contains the a priori statistics which are indicative of the encoding complexity of the video signals from which the encoded video bit streams will be generated. The original video signals are applied to encoders which compress the signals in accordance with bit allocation decisions generated by a statistics computer. The statistics computer uses the a priori statistics from the storage device to generate bit allocation decisions. Subsequently, the statistics computer may use both the a priori statistics and the a posteriori statistics received from the encoders in allocating bits.

  • Patent number: 6674797
Abstract: Ensuring integrity of a video buffer verifier (VBV) employed in MPEG-like video encoders is realized by controllably adjusting the bits being drained from a video encoder buffer (eBuff). The number of bits being drained from eBuff is adjusted through feedback to minimize the difference in the bit content of a buffer (mBuff) maintained in a bit-rate controller in the video encoder that models the buffer of a hypothetical decoder, and the bit content of that hypothetical buffer (vBuff). Specifically, this is realized by controllably inhibiting transmission of bits from eBuff during intervals that the value of a prescribed relationship is greater than a predetermined value. In one example, the prescribed relationship is dependent on an instantaneous video encoding rate, an end-to-end delay, the bit content of mBuff and the bit content of eBuff.
