  • Patent number: 6700676
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line fax machines is described. To process a fax, a source interface waits until an interface to a destination fax machine has been established before establishing an interface to a source fax machine. The source fax transmission rate must be less than or equal to the destination fax transmission rate and the data rate of the digital channel. To establish the source fax interface at the proper rate, the source interface first selects and initial data rate from a set of standard fax transmission rates. The source interface sends unacceptable rate (failure to train) messages to the source fax machine until the source fax transmission rate is less than or equal to the data channel rate and the destination fax transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6700677
Abstract: In a printing apparatus in which a part of the execution program is downloaded from the host computer, the invention allows the user to easily known the copyright information of the execution program and to select the use of such copyright. The host computer sends print data to the laser beam printer constituting the printing apparatus and downloads a part of the execution program. At the same time, the copyright information and the license information of the execution program are transmitted to the laser beam printer. The control unit of the laser beam printer processes the data based on the execution program, thereby recording the data on the recording sheet, and displays the copyright information and license information on the operation panel. Observing the display, the user selects whether or not to obtain the license by the operation panel.

  • Patent number: 6700678
Abstract: Methods and systems for increasing the likelihood of print job completion are described. In one embodiment, an automated method is described in which a print job is initiated at a first of multiple printing devices that are communicatively linked with one another. The printing devices can be the same type or different types of printing devices. Using the first printing device, the print job is monitored for completion. In the event that the print job is unable to be completed at the first printing device, the printing device automatically attempts to re-route at least a portion of the print job to one or more of the multiple printing devices. In this manner, completion of the print job can be assured with a greater degree of likelihood. Additionally, user messages can be generated by one or more of the printing devices that notify a user that initiated a print job as to the location of the various printed portions of the print job.

  • Patent number: 6700690
Abstract: A variable bandwidth tunable optical filters comprised of two transparent optical substrates, upon each of which is deposited a linearly variable multilayer interference filter coating which varies in total thickness from end to end in a wedged fashion. This wedge imparts a corresponding variation of the center wavelength of the filter bandpass with respect to the linear position of the coated filter substrates. The variable bandpass tunable filter can be adjusted to a specific center wavelength by moving the filter pair together linearly through the incident beam. The bandwidth of the filter pair is maximized when the two filters are spectrally aligned, and is determined by the bandwidth of the individual filters. The variable bandwidth of the tunable filter can be adjusted by introducing a relative linear offset between the linearly variable filter pair.

Abstract: A high-speed external optical modulator formed on a lithium niobate substrate has a diffused optical waveguide, a surface buffer layer, and electrodes for applying modulating RF energy. The electrodes are electroplated in at least two steps, resulting in a top co-planar waveguide structure lying on a second one. Low driving voltage is achieved through selection of the width, position, and dimension of the lower hot and ground electrodes. The upper ground electrodes and, preferably, also the upper hot electrode, are narrower in width than the corresponding lower electrodes, which helps to provide good velocity matching, good impedance values, and low electrical losses.

Abstract: An optical beam shaping element is used to produce a beam of high brightness from a diode bar or a single emitter diode, allowing for efficient coupling of the beam into an optical fiber. An embodiment of the beam shaping element allows the construction of a quasi-monolithic or truly monolithic beam shaper incorporating both fast axis collimation as well as beam rotation. Additional slow axis collimation or collimation of the beam-rotated fast axes of the individual emitting elements of the diode bar is also possible in one quasi-monolithic or truly monolithic design. The beam rotation element comprises an array of beam-inverting planar grin lenses aligned with their axes of equal refractive index at an angle of ±45° with respect to the slow axes of the emitters. Alterative embodiments comprise beam rotation elements based on two planar grin lens arrays, arrays of uniaxial grin lenses, arrays of uniaxial focusing reflective optic or arrays of cylindrical Fresnel lenses.

  • Patent number: 6700711
Abstract: Cameras are positioned so that at least a portion of the field of view of at least one camera is redirected by a reflective surface. Images from these cameras are merged to produce a composite image while disregarding at least a portion of a camera's field of view such that there is at least one blind region in the composite field of view. Advantageously, such blind regions can be made to encompass edges of mirror surfaces that would otherwise produce image artifacts in the composite image; this can be accomplished without introducing gaps in the angular span of the composite field of view. Data representative of the composite image is stored in a memory from which it may be retrieved selectively using a control means to display a portion of the composite image. The image and control data may be transmitted over a communication network to facilitate remote control and display.

  • Patent number: 6700718
Abstract: An apparatus and associated method is disclosed to detect a skip write error occurring during a data storage device write process using a voltage standing wave ratio (“VSWR”), determined by monitoring the voltage reflected by the write element. A change in the read/write head fly height is monitored by comparing the instantaneous voltage standing wave ratio to a baseline voltage standing wave ratio. If the read/write head fly height is determined to be outside of a predetermined range, a skip write error is assumed resulting in a suspension of the write operation and the institution of a rewrite procedure.

  • Patent number: 6700723
Abstract: Monitoring the decay of the magnetic domains and refreshing the magnetic domains when the amount of decay has passed an established threshold allows a means to compensate for the superparamagnetic effect and increase the amount of data stored on a recording media. A high frequency reference signal and a low frequency reference signal can be written onto the magnetic media. The low frequency reference signal corresponds to large magnetic bits on the storage media surface, whereas the high frequency reference signal corresponds to small magnetic bits. Because of the large difference in decay rates between the high frequency and low frequency reference signals, any change in the difference of the two signals over time actually reflects the level of signal degradation that has occurred in the high frequency reference signal.
