Abstract: The invention relates to a modular evaporator for general use, consisting of two basic evaporator modules that are alternately coupled, their number depending on the capacity of the piece of equipment. The main characteristic of said modules is that their heat surface is formed by an open, descending channel in the shape of a circular or rectangular concentric spiral. In one of said modules, the channel extends from the periphery towards the central part. In another channel, it extends from the central part to the periphery. Coupling enables continuous liquid circulation on the heat surface of the modules, from the inlet of the diluted solution into the first module until the outlet of the concentrated solution in the last module. The heat transfer coefficient is increased owing to good conduction and natural convection, a large interface area and small thickness of the liquid flow that make it possible for evaporation to take place without necessarily heating the solution to its boiling point.

Abstract: Paper is formed from typically cellulose fibres which have a tendency to become discoloured during processing. Thus, in order to provide good quality white paper, it is necessary to bleach that paper to limit biological activity and remove discolouration. Of concern with respect to this particular invention is also the requirement to add so-called optical brightness agents (OBA). These optical brightness agents essentially fluoresce in daylight in order to give the impression of pure white colour even though the underlying fibres are still yellow white after bleaching. Optical brightness agents are expensive and therefore the present invention provides a composition which reduces the proportion of OBA agent necessary to achieve desired base point increases in paper quality.

Abstract: Synthetic co-polymers having moieties capable of forming hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, or covalent bonds with cellulose fibers and paper modifying moieties capable of modifying a paper sheet are disclosed. These synthetic co-polymers are derived from the reaction of an aldehyde functional polymer and an aldehyde reactive paper modifying agent containing a non-hydroxyl aldehyde reactive functional group.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for passing a web (W) in connection with a finishing device of a paper or board machine, in which method the web (W) is passed from a preceding treatment stage to the finishing device in which the web (W) is finished in the finishing device and from which finishing device the web (W) is pased further to a subsequent treatment stage. The web (W) is brought to a roll (11; 14) of the finishing device as supported substantially before a nip area (N1; N2). The web (W) is passed from the circumference of a roll (12; 15) of the finishing device as substantially supported after the nip area (N1; N2). The invention also relates to a device for passing a web in connection with a finishing device of a paper machine.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method in a paper or board machine, in which method water is removed from a paper or board web (W) by pressing in a press section (30), in which pressing stage the web (W) is pressed in at least one press nip (35; 36), and in which method the web (W) is dried after pressing by impingement drying, in which method the web (W) is passed as a closed draw from the press section (30) to a dryer section (40), and the method applies full-width threading from the press section (30) to the dryer section (40). The web (W) is dried by impingement drying by means of impingement units (46) placed around at least one large-diameter impingement roll (45). In the method, the web (W) is passed after impingement drying as a closed draw through the dryer section (40) to a calender (60), and in the method threading is accomplished as of full width through the dryer section (40).

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for minimizing tension variation in a paper web induced by drying of the web in a paper machine. Tension variations in the paper web are caused by successive draws and moisture fluctuations. Good strength properties require optimization of the draws. In addition, the tension variation induced by moisture must be minimized. The analysis of local modulus and the strain components can be used for determining optimal locations for profiling actuators in order to achieve good tension profile. In the method according to the invention, longitudinal strain components of the web, i.e. reversible elastic strain, permanent plastic strain and frozen-in strain relievable with water are continuously measured and determined and the variation of said longitudinal components is minimized by correcting the moisture content of the paper web in a dryer section of the paper machine and/or by optimizing the draws between dryer groups in the dryer section.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for removing water from a movable roll jacket surface in a wet section of a paper-making machine, which roll jacket surface preferably belongs to a flexible roll jacket in a shoe press, said method comprising the following steps: arranging a spray device next to the roll jacket surface, making available a collecting device which is provided with an opening and collects liquid, moving said roll jacket surface past said spray device, applying a medium onto said roll jacket surface with the aid of said spray device, and collecting liquid in said liquid-collecting device. The invention is characterized in that said medium is sprayed with high kinetic energy onto said roll jacket surface to follow a fluid stream rebounding from the roll jacket surface, so that the liquid is conveyed to said liquid-collecting device.
