Abstract: Method and apparatus for producing a variable delay for an RF signal. The method can include the step of propagating the RF signal along an RF transmission line, coupling a fluidic dielectric to the RF transmission line, and dynamically changing a composition of the fluidic dielectric to selectively vary its permittivity in response to a time delay control signal. The method can also include the step of dynamically changing a composition of the fluidic dielectric to vary its permeability. The permittivity and the permeability can be varied concurrently in response to the time delay control signal. In a preferred embodiment the method can include selectively varying the permeability concurrently with the permittivity to maintain a characteristic impedance of the transmission line approximately constant.

Abstract: Several MEMS-based methods and architectures which utilize vibrating micromechanical resonators in circuits to implement filtering, mixing, frequency reference and amplifying functions are provided. A method and subsystem are provided for processing RF signals utilizing a plurality of vibrating micromechanical devices typically in the form of an IF mixer-filter and an RF channel selector or an image-reject RF filter. One of the primary benefits of the use of such architectures is a savings in power consumption by trading power for high selectivity (i.e., high Q). Also, such methods and circuits can eliminate the need for a low noise amplifier in a receiver or transceiver subsystem. Consequently, the present invention relies on the use of a large number of micromechanical links in SSI networks to implement signal processing functions with basically zero DC power consumption.

An electronic geographic boundary area may also be placed around an article that can be used to emit a signal indicative of the article leaving the area.

Abstract: A detecting device applied to a vehicle door has a signal transceiver placed above the vehicle door to monitor by downward signals if any passenger or obstacle is near the door. A control circuit is connected to and controls the signal transceiver to emit detecting signals when the vehicle door is opened. Based on the reflected signals, the detecting device judges if any passenger is near the door, and controls the closing/opening movements of the door to avoid any possible injury to passenger.

Abstract: An object tracking system is provided for tracking the removal of objects from a location and the replacement of the objects at the location. The system includes a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag attached to each of the objects to be tracked and each tag has an antenna. When activated, the RFID tag of an object transmits a unique code identifying the object. A storage unit is provided at the location and the storage unit has a plurality of receptacles configured to receive objects replaced at the location. Each receptacle has an associated antenna for activating the RFID tag of an object in the receptacle and receiving the radio frequency transmitted code of the object. The antennae of the system can be capacitive plates for conveying the radio frequency transmissions through capacitive coupling or inductive loops for conveying the transmissions through inductive coupling.

Abstract: A non-linear junction detector (“NLJD”) detects junctions between two materials exhibiting dissimilar electronic or electrical properties, such as semiconductor junctions or junctions between dissimilar metals. A target junction is illuminated with energy at a fundamental RF frequency and reflections from the non-linear junction are analysed to determine the type of junction detected. The NLJD automatically controls the power output level of a transmitter emitting the illuminating signal so as to drive the signal strength of said received signals towards a predetermined value, e.g. a minimum threshold value. Advantages of the invention are improved system efficiency and the elimination of target saturation effects and unwanted device triggering/indications.

Abstract: A tire label with an integral barrier layer. The barrier layer is formed of polyester film and is 3 to 15 microns thick. The barrier layer may be for example PET. The label may be formed on printable plastic film stock preferably coated with a thickness of between 0.001 to 0.004 inches of a pressure sensitive rubber based adhesive. The adhesive may be applied in a pattern on the film stock leaving a pull-tab to allow easy removal of the label. When adhered to a tire sidewall the label is oriented with the pull-tab in the tread direction so that the tire mounting and testing procedures do not snare it. Machine-readable data can be printed on the label in a machine-readable 2D data matrix symbology alongside a human readable ascii serial number. The label can also have an integral RFID tag.

Abstract: A signaling device for disabled persons uses a pneumatic system comprised of a special cushion, an air bleed to ambient, and a sensitive air-pressure sensor. The cushion may also serve as a head, limb, or body support. The cushion is foam-filled and self-inflating, and is capable of supporting static loads without the need for its being pressurized. A user initiates the generation of a signal by bumping the cushion, as for example with a backwards jerk of their head or a sideways kick of a limb. The resulting momentary surge in system pressure is sensed by the air-pressure switch, which is set to trip at 1/1000 of an atmosphere. The momentary closing of the contacts of the pressure switch are used to signal other assistive appliances, such as computer software for generating text.

The system is designed in a manner that the emotional conditions of the passengers are detected and, in case of change of such conditions, the plane personnel is informed so as to intervene promptly on the related passenger.

Abstract: A drowning alarm is described. It is a device which activates an alarm when a person drowns, in order to alert bystanders to the drowning, so that they can save the drowning person. The device consists of two kinds of units: a portable unit, which is worn by each swimmer, and a base station, located on the pool deck or on the beach. The portable unit produces an alarm signal when the swimmer activates a manual alarm push button on the portable unit, or when a sensor on the portable unit detects that the unit is submerged in water for longer than a certain number of seconds. The alarm signal produced by the portable unit is ultrasound or audible sound, and it propagates in water to the base station. The base station activates an alarm such as a siren. The portable unit has a light emitting diode (LED), which is switched on when the portable unit activates an alarm. This identifies the portable unit which caused the alarm, so it helps deter intentional false alarms.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a battery monitoring system for monitoring a plurality of batteries serially connected to form a string. The battery monitoring system includes a number of probes connected to at least a portion of the string, a daisy chain bus having a select channel for serially interconnecting the probes, the bus having other, parallel channels for data communication and power, and a system server. The probes each have a sensing module and a communication module. The sensing module senses characteristics of at least a portion of the string, such as voltage or current. The communication module receives the sensed characteristics and converts them into digital form for broadcast to the system server over the bus. The communication module of the probes have a memory for storing an address assigned to the corresponding probe upon reception of an initialization signal sent by the system server via the bus. In order to readdress all of the probes, a reset signal is transmitted to all of the probes.
