Abstract: Light from a light emitter is made into a linear beam extending in parallel with a direction of movement of a detection object and the beam is cast on the detection object. A linear reflected beam that is the linear beam reflected from the detection object is made incident on a light receiver. Thus first output waveform signals from the light receiver at a first time point and second output waveform signals from the light receiver at a second time point are stored into a storage unit. A moving amount detecting unit detects an amount of shift between the first output waveform signals and the second output waveform signals and calculates a moving amount of the detection object on basis of the amount of shift. Thus an optical moving amount detecting device is provided that is capable of accurately measuring a moving amount of a detection object having smooth surfaces.

Abstract: Closing bodies serve to control a pressure medium flow flowing via a fluidic valve. The closing body is mounted in an axially displaceable manner in a bore of the valve. It has a sealing section, interacting with a seating edge of the valve, and a guide section which serves to guide the valve cone in the bore. The guide section is provided with recesses which allow an overflow of pressure medium between the two sides of the closing body. The production of such closing bodies is expensive. In order to produce such closing bodies in a more cost-effective manner, the guide section of the closing body is of cylindrical form and its surface is provided with at least one helical groove which leads from the one side of the guide section to its other side. The closing bodies are used in particular in constant pressure valves for controlling fluid pressure medium. The sealing section of the closing body is normally of conical form.

Abstract: A valve assembly is designed to avoid or minimise the effect of “compression setting” which occurs when valves control the flow of some hazardous and/or corrosive fluids, especially when at an elevated temperature. The valve assembly includes a valve stem having a head portion which engages with a valve seat in order to close and seal the valve and an elastically deformable portion. In order to allow fluid to flow through the valve, the elastically deformable portion of the valve stem is deformed to allow fluid to pass between the head portion and the valve seat. An additional biasing element such as a cylindrical or conical compression spring is provided to urge the head portion towards contact with the valve seat. In this way, should “compression setting” of the elastic portion of the valve stem take place, the additional spring will ensure that the valve head is still able to be engaged with the valve seat to thereby close the valve.

Abstract: The characteristics of piezoceramic multilayer actuators based on lead-zirconate-titanate are determined to a great extent by the compatibility of PZT ceramics having a low sintering temperature with the AgPd internal metallisation during cofiring. It is important to take into consideration that Ag ions in PZT modifications have a high diffusivity at high temperatures (>800° C.) and in addition act as acceptor doping when integrated into the PZT system. The reduction of the fraction of the precious metal palladium, which prevents diffusion, is limited, as silver increasingly diffuses into the piezoceramic as the silver fraction in the internal electrodes increases. According to the invention, Ag+ ions are used to form valence-compensated compositions of the PZT system. A higher level of deformation is maintained, i.e. the acceptor-donor effect in the system is very similar to that of the PZT system modified conventionally without internal electrodes.

Abstract: A child barrier for installation in a passage or the like comprises a frame with two side portions (4) which, in use, are positioned adjacent the walls of the passage, each side portion (4) carrying one or more vertically spaced abutment members (20) for engagement with an adjacent wall. The abutment members on at least one of the side portions is connected thereto by an adjustment mechanism, each adjustment mechanism comprising an elongate threaded member (18), one end of which is connected to the associated abutment member (20) and the other end of which is longitudinally slidably received in the associated side portion. Each adjustment mechanism also includes an adjustment member (24) in screw threaded engagement with the threaded member (18).

Abstract: A safety fencing system is provided which includes a plurality of two-part poles. These poles have a flat edge and a curved edge providing a substantially “D” shape. In the preferred embodiment each flat edge includes a substantially concave portion and a substantially convex portion. These contours nest together when two flat edges are placed adjacent to one another, leaving a curved or round external shape. The nested contours and the flat edges receive a pliable material. These contours assist in “grabbing” the material to prevent it from slippage over time. Fasteners are used to secure the two parts of the poles together, capturing the material there between. Inserts are used in the ground to receive one the bottom end of the poles. Section locks are used to secure one section of fence to an adjacent section of fence. A gate is provided with two gate frame members. A first gate frame member supports the gate door and the second gate frame member supports the gate stop.

Abstract: The invention provides an electron beam device 1 comprising at least one field emission cathode 3 and at least one extracting electrode 5, whereby the field emission cathode 5 comprises a p-type semiconductor region 7 connected to an emitter tip 9 made of a semiconductor material, an n-type semiconductor region 11 forming a pn-diode junction 13 with the p-type semiconductor region 7 a first electric contact 15 on the p-type semiconductor region 7 and a second electric contact 17 on the n-type semiconductor region 11. The p-type semiconductor region 7 prevents the flux of free electrons to the emitter unless electrons are injected into the p-type semiconductor region 7 by the pn-diode junction 13. This way, the field emission cathode 3 can generate an electron beam where the electron beam current is controlled by the forward biasing second voltage V2 across the pn-diode junction. Such electron beam current has an improved current value stability.

Abstract: A quantum computing method comprising constructing a dressing transformation V between a physical Hamiltonian H and an ideal Hamiltonian HID. The physical Hamiltonian H describes a physical quantum computer that comprises a plurality of qubits, including interactions between the plurality of qubits and a continuum. The ideal Hamiltonian HID describes the universal quantum computer that corresponds to the physical quantum computer. Each qubit in the plurality of qubits is initialized and quantum calculations are performed using the plurality of qubits. Measurement of the plurality of qubits is performed in the dressed state.
