Abstract: A method and apparatus to determine the pressure of a supercritical refrigerant within a heat exchanger of a transcritical vapor compression system. A plurality of measurements, e.g., temperature, are obtained at spaced locations on the heat exchanger and the location of the minimum temperature gradient, i.e., maximum specific heat value of the refrigerant, is determined (“the inflection point”). Obtaining the refrigerant temperature at the inflection point allows the refrigerant pressure to be determined. Alternatively, the temperature of the refrigerant at a second point can be determined together with the change in specific enthalpy between the inflection point and the second point to thereby determine the pressure of the refrigerant. The system can be regulated by controlling the location of the inflection point or by controlling the temperature difference of the refrigerant at the inflection point and a second point, e.g., the outlet of the heat exchanger.

Abstract: A device and a method for producing glass fibers from preforms use a fiber furnace having heating bushes and a follow-up device for holding and feeding the preforms. The glass fibers are passed on to a drawing and sizing installation and wound as fiber bundles on take-up spools. The heating bushes are disposed in a matrix-like configuration for receiving a number of preforms. The glass fibers are provided as a band such that the glass fibers are disposed next to one another when they are received by the drawing and sizing installation. The principal matrix axes have a given offset angle in relation to one another, such that the matrix-like configuration is preferably a rhomboid-shaped configuration. A flow device creates a predetermined air flow in the heating bushes. A temperature and cooling control creates predetermined temperature profiles in the heating bushes.

Abstract: A method produces an optical fiber without requiring a vertically large space, and an apparatus implements the method. The method produces an optical fiber by heating a lower-end portion of an optical fiber preform with a heating element so that the optical fiber preform can be drawn. In this method, the optical fiber preform is drawn by moving a heat-generating portion of the heating element from the lower-end portion toward an upper-end portion of the optical fiber preform. The apparatus produces an optical fiber by heating a lower-end portion of an optical fiber preform with a heating element so that the optical fiber preform can be drawn. The apparatus comprises a mechanism for moving a heat-generating portion of the heating element from the lower-end portion toward an upper-end portion of the optical fiber preform.

Abstract: Reinforced fiber insulation is formed by depositing a mixture of textile fiber segments and rotary and/or flame attenuated segments on a surface, mixing a binder with the fibers, and heating the binder to join the fibers together. The low cost process provides a mixed fiber insulation product with improved strength after compression.

Abstract: A locking and latching system of modular construction in which some of the components of the system are pre-assembled prior to their installation into the structural framework of a vehicle door. The modular construction of the lock and latch system of the present invention can include the outside and inside door handles, the outside and inside locks, the door latch itself, as well as linkages between these components. The modular components of the present invention can further facilitate the assembly process by being of a design which simplifies the process of installing them into the structural framework of a vehicle door without requiring the use of specialized tools, thereby reducing the labor costs associated with assembly.
