Abstract: Instead of soldering a circuit board or substrate to a nickel-plated aluminum heat sink for solid state relay applications, the present invention utilizes ultrasonic welding to weld a copper foil to a non-nickel-plated aluminum heat sink. The circuit board or substrate is subsequently soldered to the copper foil. The superior solderability of copper foil brings increased solder coverage between the heat sink and substrate, improving the heat transfer from the output switching element to the heat sink. This method eliminates the need for fixturing since the copper foil is surrounded by non-nickel-plated aluminum that is non-solderable by commonly used solders. This method also eliminates the high costs associated with nickel-plating and hazardous waste disposal, since no chemical wastes are produced. With this method, the same size solid state relay is now able to carry more current due to the better heat transfer and heat dissipation capabilities.

Abstract: A pipe cutter comprises a rotary head having an axis of rotation, and a housing gear is coaxial with the rotary head such that the housing gear and rotary head have a common axis of rotation. A pipe slot extends into the rotary head and the housing gear, and a pipe cradle is provided in the pipe slot, and serves to receive a pipe. A cutting wheel is associated with the rotary head and a wheel biasing member urges the cutting wheel to extend into the pipe slot. A primary drive source is operatively connected to the housing gear by a gear system that rotates the housing gear and the rotary head about the common axis of rotation. Because the cutting wheel is biased to extend into the pipe slot and contacts a pipe placed therein, the cutting wheel revolves around the pipe and cuts into the pipe during rotation of the rotary head. The primary drive source may be manual or automated.

Abstract: An optical rotary angle sensor with at least one first measurement member able to move in the measuring direction having light-transparent and non-transparent regions located on it, at least one second measurement member arranged static relative to the first measurement member in the measuring direction, and/or at least one photoelectric transducer. To keep the distance between the rotating measurement member and the static measurement member and/or the optical-electrical transducer very small, i.e. in the range of about 10-20 ?m, and to make the centering of the two relative to each other independent of the formerly necessary shaft bearing, the measurement members are configured so that they are properly oriented relative to each other in the measuring direction and kept spaced apart by a guide provided between the measurement members. The guide can be a form-fitting connection in at least one of the directions not representing the measurement direction.

Abstract: A computer-controlled machine having a driven rotary chuck writes symbols on the hard surface of a workpiece using an impact device to displace material at workpiece sites corresponding to spots in a virtual pattern and series of virtual patterns of symbols. The machine mounts a workpiece in a position to be impacted by the device, and equipment for moving the workpiece so that it may be impacted at different sites corresponding to virtual pattern spots defined by programming in the machine's computer. The impact device comprises a rotatable driven element which is mounted in the machine rotary chuck, a housing journaling the driven element and held against rotation, an impact element in the housing having a home position from which it is movable, and a mechanism in the housing for converting the rotary motion of the driven element into longitudinal movement of the impact element to displace material at a workpiece site.

Abstract: An adjustable measuring and marking device is provided. The device has a lower portion with a bottom end and an upper end and an upper portion with a bottom end and an upper end. The upper portion telescopically interconnects with the lower portion. Measurement intervals, such as inches, are marked along the upper and lower sections so that one can use the device as a measuring apparatus. Measurements can be read at the upper end of the bottom portion, off the top portion, in inches, as well as in feet and inches. A friction fit exists between the upper and lower sections so that a measurement obtained by extending the upper section from the lower section so that the entire device is positioned between two points, can easily be transferred to another location, as the relative position of the upper and lower sections are maintained by the friction fit. Overextending the upper portion out of the lower portion is prevented by a locking pin device.

Abstract: A ruler (2) is disclosed, for desk use having an elongated ruler body (4) with a cross-sectional profile enabling at least one part of the ruler body to be placed either at a distance from the underlying layer or in contact with the underlying layer. The ruler, because of an elasticity thereof of the cross sectional profile, facilitates, the at least one part of the ruler body comprising anti-skid means (20) to establish a frictional engagement with the underlying layer by compressive deformation of the ruler body (2), so that the ruler is fixed in relation to the underlying layer. The ruler by simple means and measures easily and efficiently, solely, by the compressive deformation of the ruler body, is fixed in relation to the underlying layer.
