Publication number: 20070047885Abstract: With the current explosion of information transfer, optic fibers are becoming faster all the time. Most of the recent advances in the amounts of data that these fibers can carry per time unit have come from adding more and more wavelengths (termed lambdas) to the same fiber at the same time, a method which is called DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing). Today a single optic fiber can carry up to 80 or even 160 different lambdas simultaneously and the number is likely to increase further. The fastest bit-rates achieved so far per each lambda are around 10 or 40 Gigabit per second, but it will be hard to go much beyond this, since higher bit-rates have much lower tolerance to dispersion problems. However, The demand for broadband communications, fueled mainly by the Internet growth, is still growing by a much faster rate than the growth in the abilities of optic fibers.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2005Publication date: March 1, 2007Inventors: Yaron Mayer, Al Baur

Publication number: 20070047887Abstract: An optical noise reduction mechanism for reducing undesired frustration of total internal reflected light. Such optical noise may stem from defects in waveguide construction. Such optical noise may also stem from the difference in refractive index between any cladding layers disposed onto the planar waveguide and the refractive index of the medium (e.g., air) between the light sources and the light insertion surface of the planar waveguide. By interposing a material of appropriate refractive index, either as a thin layer onto the light insertion surface of the waveguide or filling the space between the waveguide and the light source, the planar waveguide becomes more tolerant of geometry errors and cladding layer properties because a safe operating area is established between the unadjusted critical angle of the system and the actual range of ray angles allowed admittance into the waveguide.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2005Publication date: March 1, 2007Applicant: Uni-Pixel Displays, Inc.Inventor: Martin Selbrede

Publication number: 20070047888Abstract: Disclosed are guided optical devices comprising capped polymer ridged waveguides and methods of fabrication. An exemplary waveguide has a core with a cap (CapClad), bottom cladding and side cladding. The core is patterned together with cap to form the waveguide. The cap protects the core during processing after the core is coated and dried, and the cap layer is coated. Dust particles, contamination, mechanical damage, and process-induced defects on the top surface of the core are eliminated so that waveguide loss is minimized. Propagation loss measurements for reduced-to-practice embodiments have shown a 20% improvement of the capped waveguide over existing waveguides. The manufacturing yield of optical polymer waveguides and waveguide-based polymer devices is expected to be increase.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 21, 2006Publication date: March 1, 2007Inventor: Fuhan Liu

Publication number: 20070047889Abstract: A method of depositing a top clad layer for an optical waveguide of a planar lightwave circuit. A GeBPSG top clad layer for an optical waveguide structure of a planar lightwave circuit is fabricated such that the top clad layer comprises doped silica glass, wherein the dopant includes Ge (Germanium), P (Phosphorus), and B (Boron). In depositing a top clad layer for the optical waveguide, three separate doping gasses (e.g., GeH4, PH3, and B2H6) are added during the PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) process to make Ge, P and B doped silica glass (GeBPSG). The ratio of the Ge, P, and B dopants is configured to reduce the formation of crystallization areas within the top clad layer and maintain a constant refractive index within the top clad layer across an anneal temperature range. A thermal anneal process for the top clad layer can be a temperature within a range of 950 C to 1050 C.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2006Publication date: March 1, 2007Inventors: Fan Zhong, Michael Lennon
