Abstract: A static structure is provided such as that used as an engine structure 30 within a gas turbine engine. A structure 30 comprises a hub or core 33 with a concentric ring or casing 32. The hub 33 and casing 32 are secured together through spoke or vane elements 31 which are sloped axially and tangentially relative to a principal axis X-X. In such circumstances any roll torque reaction caused by differentially rotating hub and ring motions is retained by the tangential inclination of the spokes or vanes whilst axial sloping of these spokes or vanes 31 and axially sloping of the struts 34 creates bracing in the direction of the principal axis X-X. In such circumstances essentially robust triangles are formed radially and longitudinally respectively each comprising spokes or vanes 31 and struts 34 secured at axially spaced locations on the hub or core 33.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing controlled heating, cooling and motion, in a device such as an active robotic automobile seat, are disclosed. A shape memory alloy (SMA) element, which changes shape upon application of a temperature change to the SMA element, is coupled to a thermoelectric device. Heat flows through the TED upon application of an electrical current through the TED. The apparatus is operable in one of a plurality of modes. In a first mode, a current is applied through the TED to cause a temperature change in the SMA element to change the shape of the SMA element. In a second mode, a current is applied to the TED to cause heat flow in a space adjacent to the apparatus. By controlling application of current to the TED, controlled motion, heating and cooling are achieved in the seat.

Abstract: The liquid galley refrigeration system for cooling food carts for aircraft employs an intermediate working fluid to transfer heat from one or more food carts to one or more remote chillers, allowing the carts and chillers to be advantageously distributed in the aircraft. A plurality of heat exchanges effect a cooling of the carts wherein heat from the food cart is first transferred to a first airflow; heat from the first airflow is then transferred to an intermediate working fluid that is circulated between a location immediately adjacent the food carts and a remote chiller; heat from the intermediate working fluid is subsequently transferred to the chiller working fluid; and finally, heat from the chiller working fluid is expelled. While the chiller working fluid undergoes a phase change in order to transfer heat from the intermediate working fluid to the cooling air, the intermediate working fluid remains in its liquid phase throughout its circulation.

Abstract: A cooler/container with a dry ice sublimation regulating system having an insulated dry ice module that encloses dry ice so that the module's outside surface is not hazardous to touch. Insulation, breathable material, or a combination of insulating and breathable materials, allows dry ice sublimation at a sufficiently slow rate within the attached dry ice module to control the ambient temperature in the cooler/container. Dry ice module attachment is done in a location that maximizes dry ice cooling properties, typically at or near the top of the cooler/container or its lid. Since sublimated dry ice is carbon dioxide and heavier than normal air, it falls to the bottom of the cooler and builds up. The venting placement in the dry ice module is based upon the make up of the dry ice module and the breathable materials inside of it.

Each of these sections provides its own designed stretch characteristics so that the glove fits tightly, yet provides flexibility and ease of movement. The variable stitch dimension is achieved by 1) varying the depth of penetration of a knitting needle into a fabric being knitted by a computer program, 2) adjusting the tension of yarn between a pinch roller and a knitting head by a mechanism controlled by a computer, and 3) casting off or picking up additional stitches in a course. The glove includes a plurality of finger components made from at least ten separately knitted sections, two palm components, each of which is made from at least two separately knitted sections, and a wrist component made from at least one knitted section.
