Abstract: A low-complexity dynamic channel allocation apparatus and method in a multi-carrier communication system are provided. In the low-complexity dynamic channel allocation method, subcarriers are initially allocated to total users and two users are selected from among all possible cases of two users out of the total users. The power gain of each of the subcarriers initially allocated to the selected two users is calculated, which can be generated by reallocating each subcarrier to the other user through subcarrier swapping. The power gains of the initially allocated subcarriers are ordered for each of the selected users and a pair of subcarriers with the greatest power gains for the two users are selected. Subcarriers are reallocated to the two users by swapping the selected subcarriers between the two users.

Abstract: Probability distribution functions (PDFs), of a periodic input data signal, can be used to provide eye-diagram information. An advantage of PDFs, over conventional approaches to eye-diagram collection, is that analog-to-digital conversion can be accomplished by the slicer of a receiver, provided the slicer can programmably change its threshold. A cumulative distribution function (CDF), at a particular phase of a desired eye-diagram, can be collected by having a receiver's slicer scan its threshold level. For each threshold level, a fixed number of symbols can be analyzed as follows to produce a CDF value: count the number of times a particular symbol value occurs. The derivative of a CDF can produce its PDF, where each PDF can represent a “slice” of a desired eye-diagram. For a non-periodic input signal, an eye diagram can still be formed so long as the percentage occurrence, of each symbol value, remains at least approximately the same.

Abstract: The slice thickness of tomograms of an X-ray CT apparatus is to be kept as constant as practicable within an xy plane. In projected data before three-dimensional back-projection, after convolving row-directional filter of an X-ray detector whose filter coefficient is adjusted channel by channel, three-dimensional back-projection is performed to achieve image reconstruction thereby to control the slice thickness of tomograms according to the distance from the center of the xy plane. The slice thickness is controlled to keep it as constant as practicable independent of the distance from that center to regulate the picture quality of tomograms. Further, the relative density of distances on the reconstruction plane of X-ray detector data or projection data projected on the reconstruction plane is controlled by creating virtual projection data thereby to improve the picture quality of tomograms.

The primary EDS scanning process and secondary CT scanning processes can be either separate machines or multiple processes within a single scanner. The secondary scanning process may utilizes dual energy scanning and/or high resolution scanning to resolve threats based upon the nature of the threat. An alarm indicates threats which cannot be resolved by the secondary CT scanning process for further operator investigation. Threats may be reviewed and resolved by an operator before the secondary CT scanning process.

Abstract: An x-ray system for narrow bandwidth imaging of in particular small objects is provided. X-radiation from an x-ray source (1) is focused by chromatic x-ray optics (2) on an x-ray energy dependent distance from the optics. Asymmetric focusing of the x-ray optics is compensated for by choosing an asymmetric focal spot of the source. The energy selective focusing makes possible blocking unwanted x-ray energies (3) from reaching an object (4). In that way optimization of the energy according to the size of the object can be done to minimize dose and maximize signal-to-noise ratio (7). Furthermore, a critical edge subtraction image can be obtained at the object dependent optimal energy if the object is injected with a contrast agent having an absorption edge close to the optimal energy (8). Radiation is registered (5) and processed (6) to combine structural and energy subtraction images.

Abstract: A method and system for detecting airways in 3D lung image data is disclosed. The 3D lung image data is filtered using one or more filters based on first and second order derivatives of the CT image data. Each filter calculates a value for each voxel of the 3D lung image data, and the values from all of the filters are combined to determine a voxel score for each voxel. If the voxel score for a voxel is greater than or equal to a threshold value, the voxel is considered an airway candidate.
