Abstract: A liquid crystal panel includes a pair of glass substrates and, and a liquid crystal layer provided therebetween. In a surface at a side opposite from the liquid crystal layer in the glass substrate, a recessed part is formed at a position corresponding to a foreign substance (bright spot defect portion). A light shielding layer which shields light is formed in the recessed part. Accordingly, when comparing with the case where a light shielding layer is formed on the surface of a glass substrate as conventional display, a distance between the light shielding layer and the foreign substance can be made short, and thereby, the light shielding range by the light shielding layer can be made larger than a conventional display.

Abstract: The present invention provides interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels that have high oxygen permeability, strength, water content, and resistance to protein adsorption. The hydrogels include two interpenetrating polymer networks. The first polymer network is based on a hydrophilic telechelic macromonomer. The second polymer network is based on a hydrophilic monomer. The hydrophilic monomer is polymerized and cross-linked to form the second polymer network in the presence of the first polymer network. The telechelic macromonomer preferably has a molecular weight of between about 575 Da and about 20,000 Da. Mixtures of molecular weights may also be used. In a preferred embodiment, the hydrophilic telechelic macromonomer is PEG-diacrylate or PEG-dimethacrylate and the hydrophilic monomer is an acrylic-based monomer. The material is designed to serve as a contact lens.

Abstract: An image display system comprises a first liquid crystal projector which projects a counterclockwise-rotating, circularly polarized light beam to form an image containing specific visual information on a screen and a second liquid crystal projector which projects a clockwise-rotating, circularly polarized light beam to form a white image on the same screen. When viewed with the naked eye, a combination of the two images projected on the screen appears totally white. A viewer wearing a dedicated viewing device equipped with an optical filter which allows counterclockwise-rotating, circularly polarized light to pass through can selectively see the image projected by the first liquid crystal projector.

Abstract: A projection optical system comprises eight reflectors and forms a reduced image of a first surface (4) onto a second surface (7). It comprises a first reflective imaging optical system (G1) for forming an intermediate image of the first surface and a second reflective imaging optical system (G2) for forming an image of the intermediate image onto the second surface. The first reflective imaging optical system includes a first reflector (M1), a second reflector (M2), a third reflector (M3), and a fourth reflector (M4) successively as light enters from the first surface side. The second reflective imaging optical system includes a fifth reflector (M5), a sixth reflector (M6), a seventh reflector (M7), and an eighth reflector (M8) successively as light enters from the first surface side. This realizes a reflective projection optical system which can favorably correct aberrations while having a favorable reflection characteristic with respect to X-rays and keeping the reflectors from becoming bulky.
