  • Publication number: 20070163777
Abstract: A packer or plug features a main sealing element that swells after a delay long enough to get it into proper position. A sleeve eventually goes away to let the well fluids at the main sealing element to start the swelling process until contact with the surrounding tubular or the wellbore is established. Other sleeves that are disposed above and below the main sealing element preferably swell, but mainly in a longitudinal direction against the main sealing element to increase its contact pressure against the surrounding tubular or the wellbore. The longitudinally swelling members may also be covered to initiate their growth after the main sealing element has started or even completed its swelling action. The longitudinally swelling members can be constrained against radial growth to direct most or all of their swelling action longitudinally. Extrusion barriers above and below the main sealing element can optionally be used.

  • Publication number: 20070163784
Abstract: The present invention generally provides a reduced downtime maintenance apparatus and method for replacing and/or repairing a subassembly in sealing equipment for oil field use. The invention allows the removal of rotating portions of a rotary drilling head without having to remove non-rotating portions. The reduction in weight and size allows a more efficient repair and/or replacement of a principal wear component such as a packer. Specifically, the packer in a rotary drilling head can be removed independent of bearings and other portions of the rotary drilling head. Furthermore, because of the relatively small size and light weight, the packer can be removed typically without having to use a crane to lift a rotary BOP and without disassembling portions of the drilling platform. In some embodiments, the packer can be removed with the drill pipe without additional equipment. Furthermore, the packer can be removed remotely without necessitating manual disengagement typically needed below the platform.

Abstract: An earth-boring bit has bit legs having hardfacing covering the majority of the outer surface. The hardfacing may have gaps at an area surrounding the ball plug and an area around a fixture dimple. The hardfacing may be multi-layer, with the layers differing in composition. Recesses may be located at the leading and trailing edges of the supporting metal so as to provide a thicker area of hardfacing at these corners. The supporting metal of the outer surface of the bit leg may also have an upper cylindrical section and a lower tapered section. The hardfacing has a constant outer diameter but will taper in thickness in the lower tapered section. The thickness of the hardfacing may also vary in a circumferential direction with a greater thickness over at least one of the corners.

Abstract: A detection circuit is provided with a differential capacitive sensor and with an interface circuit having a first sense input and a second sense input, electrically connected to the differential capacitive sensor. Provided in the interface circuit are: a sense amplifier connected at input to the first sense input and to the second sense input and supplying an output signal related to a capacitive unbalancing of the differential capacitive sensor; and a common-mode control circuit, connected to the first sense input and to the second sense input and configured to control a common-mode electrical quantity present on the first sense input and on the second sense input. The common-mode control circuit is of a totally passive type and is provided with a capacitive circuit, which is substantially identical to an equivalent electrical circuit of the differential capacitive sensor and is driven with a driving signal in phase opposition with respect to a read signal supplied to the differential capacitive sensor.

Abstract: In one embodiment of the invention, a steering system for mobile medical equipment is disclosed including left and right steerable wheel assemblies including left and right steerable wheels, left and right parallelogram linkages coupled to the left and right steerable wheel assemblies, a steering function generator coupled to the left and right parallelogram linkages, and a steering tiller coupled to the steering function generator. The left and right parallelogram linkages transfer differing left and right wheel angles to the left and right steerable wheel assemblies respectively. The steering function generator generates the left wheel angle (LWA) of the left steerable wheel and the right wheel angle (RWA) of the right steerable wheel. The steering tiller receives an input steering angle to generate the left wheel angle and the right wheel angle to control the direction of the mobile medical equipment around flooring.

Abstract: The present invention provides an accessory drive system for a hybrid electric vehicle having an electric variable transmission. The apparatus includes an engine operatively connected to the electric variable transmission. The electric variable transmission includes a gear arrangement configured to selectively produce a plurality of speed ratios. The electric variable transmission also includes at least two motor/generators connected to the gear arrangement, and to a storage device. A drive pulley is connected to an output shaft of the engine. A plurality of driven pulleys are each connected to an accessory. A drive belt connectively couples the drive pulley and the plurality of driven pulleys. A controller is operatively connected to the engine and the motor/generators, and is configured to control the engine and the motor/generators to ensure the accessories are adequately powered.

Abstract: Driving forces of an engine and an electric motor can be transmitted to driving wheels, and the engine and the driving wheels can be mechanically connected and disconnected by a clutch. A vehicle ECU disengages the clutch and controls the motor to generate a required torque when an upper limit torque generable by the motor is equal to or above the required torque. On the other hand, the ECU engages the clutch and controls the engine and the motor in such a manner that a sum of the torques of the engine and the motor becomes the required torque when the upper limit torque is lower than the required torque. The ECU engages the clutch even if the upper limit torque is equal to or above the required torque when the revolution speed of the motor becomes equal to or above a predetermined revolution speed during traveling of the vehicle.

Abstract: A hybrid SOFC/gas turbine electric generating system comprising an SOFC stack, a hydrocarbon reformer, a first anode tailgas hydrogen-rich combustor to drive a first gas turbine stage, and a second stoichiometric combustor to drive a second gas turbine stage to drive a generator. Anode tailgas is also recycled into the reformer for substantially endothermic reforming of hydrocarbon fuel. Oxidant is provided as pure oxygen—which may be stored as liquid oxygen. All nitrogen may be excluded. Cathode exhaust is passed to the first combustor, to the second combustor, and is recycled into the cathodes. The turbine exhaust is passed through successive heat exchangers cooled by liquid oxygen being vaporized, precipitating water and solid CO2. The system is operated at about 800 kPa (about 8 atmospheres), thereby increasing the power output of the stack. The system may be operated with no gaseous exhaust or with by-products of water and CO2.
