Abstract: A method of manufacturing mineral fibers includes rotating an orificed spinner and supplying molten mineral material to the spinner to centrifuge steams of molten mineral material. A downward annular flow of attenuating gases is directed to attenuate the streams of molten mineral material into mineral fibers. A mixture of combustion air and combustion gas is supplied to an annular burner positioned around the spinner. Heat from the annular burner is directed toward the spinner and the streams of molten mineral material to heat the spinner and assist in attenuating the streams of molten mineral material into mineral fibers. A pressure sensor senses the pressure of the combustion air prior to the introduction of the combustion air to the burner. The pressure of the combustion air is controlled in response to the sensed pressure to maintain the pressure of the combustion air at a specific pressure.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for reducing crosstalk in a structural health monitoring system. A pair of actuator input signals are sent to an actuator, each resulting in the transmission of stress waves to a corresponding sensor. The sensor then converts these stress waves to a pair of output signals, each having a crosstalk portion due to electromagnetic interference from the input signals to the actuator, and a stress wave portion corresponding to the stress waves. Various methods of varying the actuator input signals, the input to the actuator, and the output of the sensor result in two output signals that can be combined so as to reduce the crosstalk portions and isolate the stress wave portions. This allows actuators and sensors to be placed sufficiently close together that the stress wave portions of sensor output signals can overlap their crosstalk, without corrupting or otherwise compromising the data contained therein.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting particles flowing in a fluid within a conduit involve analysis of acoustic pressure signals detected with an array of at least two pressure sensors. The analysis can include monitoring for attenuation in power of the acoustic disturbances within the fluid and/or a reduction in a speed of sound in the fluid. This attenuation in power or reduction in the speed of sound can be detected to provide an output or otherwise indicate that particles are present in the fluid.

Abstract: It should be possible to balance microphones and hearing apparatus more reliably. To this end, provision is made for a method for checking a measuring situation, wherein at least two measurement points of a frequency response of the hearing apparatus are recorded. A check then establishes whether the at least two measurement points lie in a predetermined tolerance range above a threshold. If this is the case, an OK signal is output. Otherwise, if at least one of the measurement points lies outside the tolerance range, the position of the measurement point outside the tolerance range is ascertained and a fault signal is output depending on the ascertained position. It is therefore possible to establish, for example, whether a measuring chamber lacks proofness, a microphone is blocked or the microphone is completely malfunctioning.

Abstract: An ultrasonic probe for examining an item. The probe includes a body having a contact surface adapted for contacting the item when being examined and an ultrasonic transducer attached to the body and spaced from the contact surface. The probe further includes a spacer positioned in the body between the transducer and the contact surface for spacing the transducer from the item when being examined. The spacer includes a coupling surface facing the item when being examined and a transducer surface facing the transducer. The probe also includes a fluid outlet positioned adjacent the coupling surface of the spacer for delivering coupling fluid to the coupling surface as a film so that the coupling fluid tends to maintain contact with the spacer due to surface tension after the fluid is delivered through the outlet.

Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the vibrations of a machine that includes a reflective patch affixed to the machine and a vibration detection unit including an optics module. The optics module may be positioned remotely from the machine such that the optics module transmits an electromagnetic beam to the reflective patch and reflected from the reflective patch to the optics module. The optics module demodulates the electromagnetic beam to determine the vibration of the machine.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for mini core in drilling samples accumulated in the cups by sample catcher. It allows the explorations to obtain high resolution formation evaluation on drilling cuttings samples. The Mini Core apparatus consists of narrow tubular with a piston or cap. The thin wall tubular is rotated and/or vibrated and pressed in to the cup with wet sample of drilling cuttings. The piston or cap is placed after the desired depth of sample is reached and the vacuum is reestablished. The core is pulled out from the cup and then analyzed within the tubular or squeezed out on a flat tray for horizontal analysis. The micro layering can be visually separated, before they are mixed as in conventional sample and the information is lost.

Abstract: A shift fork restrictor operably disposed in a transfer case for the purpose of allowing the shift motor to transfer energy to the currently existing double wound spring, where the energy is stored until the shift motor sensor indicates that the motor is in the proper range location. When the motor is in the proper range location, the stored energy in the spring is released by the shift fork restrictor releasing the cam allowing for maximum torque and speed to be provided through the secondary rail, cam, and shift fork to complete the requested range shift. This configuration can be used to, among other things, select a high or low range in the transfer case, as well as couple the input and output shafts together, which have different gear ratios.
