Abstract: A process for increasing the specific output of a combined cycle power plant and providing flexibility in the power plant rating, both without a commensurate increase in the plant heat rate, is disclosed. The present invention demonstrates that the process of upgrading thermal efficiencies of combined cycles can often be accomplished through the strategic use of additional fuel and/or heat input. In particular, gas turbines that exhaust into HRSGs, can be supplementally fired to obtain much higher steam turbine outputs and greater overall plant ratings, but without a penalty on efficiency. This method by and large defines a high efficiency combined cycle power plant that is predominantly a Rankine (bottoming) cycle. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention include a load driven by a topping cycle engine, powered by a topping cycle fluid which exhausts into a heat recovery device.

Abstract: To meet emissions standards, many gas turbine engines use some form of lean, pre-mixed combustion system. The lean nature of the fuel may lead to combustion oscillations or other instabilities. A fuel injector having an inner and outer cylinder receives pilot fuel and a portion of pre-mixed fuel-air into an annular space defined by the inner and outer cylinders. The amount of pilot fuel mixed with the pre-mixed fuel-air can be modulated based on sensed conditions within the turbine engine. Continuous modulation of the pilot fuel to adapt to the sensed conditions improves main burner flames and response to engine transients.

Abstract: A method of protecting a turbine compressor of a gas turbine engine that is part of an integrated gasification combined-cycle power generation system that includes an air separation unit that may include the steps of: (1) extracting an amount of compressed air that is compressed by the turbine compressor; (2) supplying the extracted amount of compressed air to the air separation unit; and (3) varying the amount of compressed air extracted from the turbine compressor based upon a desired compressor pressure ratio across the turbine compressor. The method further may include the step of supplying the air separation unit with a supply of compressed air from a main air compressor. The amount of compressed air supplied to the air separation unit by the main air compressor may be varied based upon the amount of compressed air extracted from the turbine compressor.

Abstract: A turbo computer is described. The turbo computer includes a computer case, a turbo switch, a fan and a turbo cooling device. The fan regularly reduces the operating temperature of a CPU of the turbo computer. The turbo switch turns on the turbo cooling device to further reduce the operating temperature of the CPU so as to prevent the frequency downgrade of the CPU. Therefore, the turbo computer can work under a suitable operating temperature and prevent the frequency downgrade or damage caused by a high operating temperature so as to increase the life-span of the CPU and the computer.

Abstract: A heat pump, and in particular a heat pump for heating a hot water supply is provided with an improved defrost mode. The defrost mode is actuated to remove frost from an outdoor evaporator that may accumulate during cold weather operation. An algorithm for operation of the defrost mode is developed experimentally by seeking to maximize the heat transfer provided by the refrigerant. A heating system condition is experimentally related to the heat transfer capacity. One then maximizes the average heat transfer capacity to determine the optimum initiation point for the defrost mode. Further, protections are included into the defrost mode. When the heat pump is utilized to heat hot water, methods are provided to prevent the water that remains in the heat exchanger from becoming unduly heated. Abstract: A waste energy-based vehicle air conditioning system includes efficient compression driving means coupled to refrigeration means. In one implementation, the compression driving means includes a controller (e.g., magnetic clutch) that couples mechanical waste energy from an engine fan axle, a vehicle drive shaft, or a transmission shaft to an axle of a refrigerant compressor. Alternatively, the controller can also include a battery that is charged from the mechanical waste energy. Upon detecting certain pressure values, the controller powers the refrigerant compressor with a rotating axle (e.g., during deceleration) or with battery power, as appropriate. In one implementation, the controller is configured to engage compression immediately upon detecting that the vehicle is decelerating. One or more kits can be used to retrofit existing vehicles to operate the respective air conditioning systems principally on waste energy.

The radiator grille is allowed to move and approach bumper rearward of a vehicle. According to this configuration, the engaging projections engage the to-be-engaged projections and they are engaged with and fixed to each other. At this time, a bumper-side seizing unit of the bumper is fitted into a grille-side seizing unit of the radiator grille, thereby limiting the vertical direction. In an engaged state between the engaging projections and the to-be-engaged projections, an inclining surface of one of the engaging projections comes into contact with a rearward inclining surface of the one of the to-be-engaged projections, and an inclining surface of the other engaging projection is separated from a rearward inclining surface of the other to-be-engaged projection.

Abstract: A tube expanding device includes: a plurality of rollers each having a tapered portion whose diameter increases toward its front side; a cylindrical expander frame for freely rotatably holding the plurality of rollers on a concentric circle; a mandrel inserted in the expander frame so as to be freely slidable and rotatable relative to the expander frame, and having a tapered portion whose diameter decreases toward its front side, the tapered portion of the mandrel matching the tapered portion of each roller; a drive device coupled to the expander frame and rotating the expander frame; and a moving device for moving the mandrel forward and backward relative to the expander frame. By moving the mandrel forward relative to the expander frame, the tapered portion of the mandrel abuts on the tapered portions of the plurality of rollers and thereby expands a diameter of a circumscribed circle formed by the plurality of rollers.

Abstract: A system for optically characterizing an acoustic beam generally includes an immersant, which is an immersion medium seeded with a plurality of seed particles that respond to illumination with fluorescence indicative of at least one parameter of the immersant such as flow or temperature. Optical transmitters illuminate the immersant slicewise, and optical receptors receive the fluorescence in order to generate a three-dimensional map of the parameter over time. A processor back-calculates one or more characteristics of an acoustic beam that results in the map. The processor initially generates a behavior model of an acoustic beam propagating in the immersant by utilizing initial guesses for the characteristics. The initial guess model is compared to the map, and an optimization routine is used to refine the initial guesses. The process repeats iteratively with refined guesses until the difference between the model and the map is minimized.
