Abstract: A method for real-time monitoring the fabrication of magnetic memory units uses an ion beam milling machine, mainly using plasma to etch the films. The method for real-time measuring resistance during etching can acquire the charge carriers' transport characteristics of tunneling resistance with current perpendicular to the plane of film. By means of monitoring the etching end point by a module of tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) memory unit on the chip, other tunneling magneto-resistance memory units on the chip can be fabricated in situ. By controlling applied voltage and etch time of the etch machine, samples of varying film thicknesses can be obtained. Different materials have different etch rates which depends on the amount of argon, applied voltage and accelerated voltage used in etching. This invention can modulate adequate parameters according to the requirements of different products, whose advantages include real-time management and analysis of non-conformities and causes.

The polishing rate and surface finish of the layer on the wafer are improved by controlling the surface speed of both the platen and head, controlling the current applied to the pad, and preselecting the density of the perforations on the fully conductive polishing pad. ECMP produces much higher removal rates, good surface finishes, and good planarization efficiency at a lower down force. Generally, increasing the surface speed of both the platen and the head will increase the surface smoothness. Also, increasing the current density on the wafer will increase the surface smoothness. There is virtually no difference in the smoothness of the wafer surface between the center, middle, and edge of the wafer. For copper, removal rates of 10,000 ?/min and greater can be achieved.

Abstract: An ECMP method that suppresses hillock formation on a substrate includes the step of buffing a substrate before a two-step electrochemical mechanical polishing process. The buffing step prevents hillocks from forming around the features of the substrate and does not interfere with the protrusion formation. The buffing step includes contacting the substrate with a polishing pad and rotating the substrate and the polishing pad in opposite directions.

Abstract: Methods and devices for determining the concentration of a constituent in a physiological sample are provided. The physiological sample is introduced into an electrochemical cell having a working and counter electrode. At least one electrochemical signal is measured based on a reaction taking place at the cell. The preliminary concentration of the constituent is then calculated from the electrochemical signal. This preliminary concentration is then multiplied by a hematocrit correction factor to obtain the constituent concentration in the sample, where the hematocrit correction factor is a function of the at least one electrochemical signal. The subject methods and devices are suited for use in the determination of a wide variety of analytes in a wide variety of samples, and are particularly suited for the determination of analytes in whole blood or derivatives thereof, where an analyte of particular interest is glucose.
