  • Patent number: 7281356
Abstract: A support module interconnects with other support modules to support a number of core elements for encapsulation within a concrete structure. The module has a planar frame defining first and second cutouts. Each cutout has an arc shape so that when modules are assembled, the cutouts of different modules define a circular aperture for closely receiving one of the core elements. Each cutout has a first peripheral arc portion and a concentric second arc portion larger than the first portion. The first portion provides an aperture of a first diameter, and upon removal of the first portion, the second portion provides an aperture of a larger second diameter. The frame having connection elements that to connect with other support modules to securely receive the core elements. The module may include a separately formed arcuate insert fastened to the cutout to provide a smaller aperture.

  • Patent number: 7281368
Abstract: In an NOx discharge quantity estimation method for an internal combustion engine equipped with an EGR apparatus, the gas components (e.g., oxygen molecules and NOx) of intake gas taken into a combustion chamber are assumed to be uniformly distributed throughout the entire region of the combustion chamber. Under such assumption, the combustion chamber is divided into a combustion region (region B) and a non-combustion region (region A) by making use of the ratio of the “mass of oxygen consumed as a result of combustion” to the “total mass of oxygen taken in the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 7281369
Abstract: A filter (14) traps particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas of a diesel engine (1). The filter (14) is regenerated by burning the trapped particulate matter through an operation to raise the exhaust gas temperature. An oxidation catalyst which promotes combustion of the particulate matter is coated onto the filter (14). The oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas upstream of the filter (14) and the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas downstream of the filter (14) during the regeneration period are detected using universal exhaust gas oxygen sensors (17, 16). A controller (25) determines a substantial regeneration period on the basis of the difference between these oxygen concentrations, and by comparing a maximum value of the difference between the oxygen concentrations during the substantial regeneration period with a predetermined threshold, determines deterioration of the filter (14) with a high degree of precision.

  • Patent number: 7281370
Abstract: Temperature of each cooling target fluid is detected. When the flow rate of a cooling target fluid passing through a cooling system is high, the fan revolution speed of a cooling fan of the cooling system is controlled to achieve a target fan revolution speed so that the detected temperature of the cooling target fluid reaches a preset target temperature. In cases where the engine is in a low idling state, the flow rate of each cooling target fluid passing through the cooling system is reduced. The fan revolution speed of the cooling fan is controlled to achieve a new target fan revolution speed that is lower than the target fan revolution speed.

  • Patent number: 7281371
Abstract: A compressed air pumped hydro energy storage and distribution system includes a first reservoir of water and a second reservoir of air and water. An air pressure source, connected to the second reservoir, develops a pressure head in the second reservoir. A pump/turbine-motor/generator, received by the first reservoir, is connected to a regional energy grid. During peak demand periods, the pressure head forces water through the pump/turbine-motor/generator to generate power, delivered to the grid. During low demand periods, the pump/turbine-motor/generator pumps water back to the second reservoir, regenerating the pressure head. A third air reservoir interconnected with the second reservoir and a gas turbine generator can be used to generate power during peak demand periods. The reservoirs can be tunnels or abandoned mines, reinforced and sealed by pressure grouting and/or an internal liner, maintained well beneath the earth's surface and intersecting the path of the grid.

  • Patent number: 7281381
Abstract: A mechanical thermo-voltaic solar power system (MeTSoPoS) that uses a mechanical generator, instead of the photovoltaic panel commonly in use today, is disclosed. The system is comprised of three major subsystems: (1) a light collector array, (2) a mechanical thermo-voltaic generator, and (3) a storage and retrieval system. At the center of the system is the light collection array comprised of solar collector elements. These collector elements are connected to optical conduits (fiber optic cables) that carry the light energy to a mechanical generator. An automatic aiming system is used to align the collector elements directly at a light source for maximum light output. Each light collector element is comprised of a set of lenses that focus a larger area of light down to a point small enough to inject into an optical conduit. Abstract: A thermal machine that can function as either a refrigerator or an external combustion heat engine is disclosed. A working gas undergoes four thermodynamic processes that comprise a Brayton cycle. Two of these processes, adiabatic compression and adiabatic expansion, take place in the same cylinder, within which a piston, driven by a crankshaft, reciprocates. The remaining two processes, each of which is a transfer of heat at constant pressure, take place in a high pressure heat exchanger and a low pressure heat exchanger. A rotary valve, rotating at one-half crankshaft speed, creates passages between the cylinder and the heat exchangers, and is constructed so that compression and expansion ratios are equal.

  • Patent number: 7281390
Abstract: An indirect evaporative cooler assembly includes staggered wet and dry channels. An electric fan moves air through the assembly. Air passes through the wet channels where a material wicks moisture stored in a reservoir into the wet channels. As a result, the side walls of the wet channels are evaporatively cooled. Air moving through dry channels is cooled by the cooling of the walls of the wet channels, and by the presence of louvered convoluted fins in the dry channels that allow for air circulation and further heat dissipation. The wet channels are distinguished by the presence of an electrolyte saturating the material, and electrodes disposed on either side of the material combined to generate an electrical current. Pairs of electrodes are connected in series, and generate electricity to power the electric fan. An auxiliary power source is activated when the voltage from the electrodes drops below a pre-determined level.

  • Patent number: 7281400
Abstract: A padlock for motorcycle brake disks having a body with a neck whose width is adjusted to the thickness of a motorcycle brake disk, and a latch which can pass through one of the conventional orifices of this brake disk. The latch operates between a retracted position within the body and an extended position in which it penetrates with its tip into a locking mechanism formed inside the body itself. Once the padlock has been positioned on the disk brake, the body prevents turning of the wheel because it abuts against the motorcycle chassis.

  • Patent number: 7281405
Abstract: A method and device are disclosed for calibrating sensors, which sensors are arranged on semiconductor chips and are e.g. to be used for detecting a substance in a fluid. The sensors are calibrated while they are still assembled on a semiconductor wafer by exposing the wafer to a calibration fluid containing a known amount of the substance to be measured. Hence, rather than first cutting the wafer, the sensors are calibrated at an early stage. For this purpose, they are placed on a chuck below a lid. The calibration fluid with known parameters is introduced between the wafer and the lid. This allows to test and calibrate a large number of sensors quickly.

  • Patent number: 7281406
Abstract: In a sensor system, a detection waveform-forming unit detects a vibration component and forms a waveform of a detected angular velocity based on the vibration component. Components of the waveform are of opposite phases relative to each other and acceleration waveform components are in phase relative to each other. An acceleration signal-forming unit operates on the waveform to cancel the waveform of opposite phases to each other, and produces a second kind acceleration signal. An abnormal condition-detecting unit detects an abnormal condition in either the angular velocity sensor unit or an acceleration sensor unit provided separately based on the second kind acceleration signal and a first kind acceleration signal.
