Abstract: A storage building such as a garage of a residential house is heated to a low temperature above freezing but below that suitable for human habitation by connecting a closed loop pipe and a pump so as to pump heat transfer liquid through a portion of the pipe embedded in a cast concrete lid of a septic tank and through another portion of the pipe embedded in a cast concrete floor of the building. The simple system avoids use of a complex heat pump by using the limited heat available from the septic tank to directly heat the garage floor to a low temperature but above freezing.

Abstract: Pressure-balanced accumulator apparatus for use in subsea operations is disclosed which comprises a housing and an accumulator within the housing at the first end of the housing. The accumulator has first and second chambers that are hermetically sealed from one another, with a pressurized gas in the first chamber and a pressurized fluid in the second chamber. A third chamber in the housing abuts the accumulator and contains silicon oil fluid. A movable piston is located within the housing proximate the second end of the housing. Ambient pressure is communicated to one end of the piston, and ambient pressure plus the pressure in the second chamber is communicated to the second end of the piston. The cross-sectional areas of the two ends of the piston are selected to optimize the pressure at which the piston begins to expel fluid from the second chamber.

Abstract: A downhole tool (10) for use in isolating a formation in a well bore from fluid pressure introduced from the surface. Mounted in a work string, the tool provides an axial throughbore (18) and radial outlets (40, 42) above and below a permanent sealing element (26), such as a diverter cup. Valve members (44, 50) which may be nested sleeves located within the axial bore are manipulated by activation through the work string, to move sequentially such that (a) a first circulation path is created around the seal, via the radial outlets and independent of the axial throughbore; (b) the axial throughbore is obstructed and a second circulation path is estate fished between the axial throughbore and the upper radial outlet; and (c) flow is re-established through the axial bore while maintaining the second flow path.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in the off-line make-up of drill pipe stands on drilling rigs used in the exploration and production of oil and gas reserves are disclosed. The disclosed invention is a pipe handling system in which a section of the V-door ramp attached to a drilling rig structure pivots to allow one or more joints of drill pipe to be placed in a vertical position. Through use of an off-line roughneck in conjunction with an off-line drill pipe elevator, the joints of drill pipe held in the vertical position via the pivoting pipe handler of the present invention can be connected together, connected to additional joints of drill pipe, and placed in a racking board to be stored until they are subsequently connected to the drill string. The use of the pivoting pipe handler of the present invention allows stands of drill pipe to be “made-up” without the need to interrupt drilling operations and, thus, significantly reduces the amount of time required to drill a borehole.

Abstract: A packer or bridge plug uses a sealing element made from a shape memory polymer (SMP). The packer element receives heat to soften the SMP while the element is compressed and retained. While so retained, the heat is removed to allow the SMP to get stiff so that it effectively seals a surrounding tubular. High expansion rates are possible as the softness of the material under thermal input allows it to be reshaped to the surrounding tubular from a smaller size during run in and to effectively retain a sealed configuration after getting stiff on reduction in its core temperature while longitudinally compressed.
