Publication number: 20070242708Abstract: A Fabry-Pérot (FP) laser device (1) has an n-type substrate (2), an active region (3), a p-type cladding (4), an insulator (5), and a contact (6). The cladding (4) comprises a ridge (7) having a number of slots (8). The slots (8) cause a partial longitudinal reflection of the light. The precise locations of the slots are chosen to accurately and predictably achieve a particular selected mode or modes in the output light. A method to design a slot pattern both preferentially selects a particular Fabry-Pérot mode as the peak emission wavelength and also suppresses an arbitrary number of neighbouring Fabry-Pérot modes. The method selects a set of Fabry-Pérot modes in preference to other Fabry-Pérot modes within the cavity. In this way the method addresses the important problems for semiconductor lasers of predetermination of the peak lasing wavelength and also stability of the peak lasing mode with changes in temperature.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2005Publication date: October 18, 2007Applicant: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK-NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IREInventors: Stephen O'Brien, Eoin O'Reilly

Publication number: 20070242714Abstract: A material having a surface and a dopant in the material distributed whereby the material has a spatially variant optical flux density profile. In accordance with the invention, tailored non-uniform gain profiles within a Yb:YAG laser component (rod, slab, disc, etc.) are achieved by a spatial material modification in the spatially masked pre-forms. High temperature-assisted reduction leads to the coordinate-dependent gain profiles, which are controlled by the topology of the deposited solid masks. The gain profiles are obtained by reducing the charge state of the laser-active trivalent Yb3+ ions into inactive divalent Yb2+ ions. This valence conversion process is driven by mass transport of ions and oxygen vacancies. These processes, in turn, affect the dopant distribution throughout the surface and bulk laser crystal. By reducing proportionally more Yb3+ ions at the unmasked areas of component, than in the masked areas, the coordinate-dependent or spatially-controlled gain profiles are achieved.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 14, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: David Sumida, Robert Byren, Michael Ushinsky

ISI compensation is partitioned into two stages; a first stage compensates ISI components induced by characteristics of a transmitter's partial response pulse shaping filter in a demodulator, a second stage compensates ISI components induced by characteristics of a multi-pair transmission channel in a Viterbi decoder. High speed decoding is accomplished by reducing the DFE depth by providing an input signal from a multiple decision feedback equalizer to the Viterbi based on a tail value and a subset of coefficient values received from a unit depth decision-feedback equalizer. Power reduction is accomplished by adaptively truncating active taps in the NEXT, FEXT and echo cancellation filters, or by disabling decoder circuitry portions, as channel response characteristics allow.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2007Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Oscar Agazzi, John Creigh, Mehdi Hatamian, David Kruse, Arthur Abnous, Henry Samueli

Publication number: 20070242740Abstract: Novel systems and methods are described in which performance of equalizers can be improved by reducing the effects of error propagation in equalizers that use a Viterbi Decoder. Systems and methods of symbol correction in prediction decision feedback equalization architectures are described including systems and methods that include an enhanced Viterbi decoder and novel methods of symbol correction to obtain better system performance. The use of a blending algorithm is described to reduce errors in symbol decoding. Histories of deep trace back depth symbols can be maintained to enable more accurate decisions. Systems and methods described can provide advantage in the feedback path of adaptive equalizers in trellis decoders. The invention provides novel techniques for improving the performance of equalizers by reducing the effects of error propagation in equalizers that use a Viterbi Decoder.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 17, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventor: Jin Kim

Publication number: 20070242741Abstract: Disclosed are a receiver circuit, method and design architecture of a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) Clock-And-Data Recovery (CDR) architecture that utilizes/produces one sample-per-bit in the receiver and reduces bit-error-rate (BER). An integrating receiver is combined with a decision feedback equalizer along with the appropriate (CDR) loop phase detector to maintain a single sample per bit requirement. The incoming voltage is converted to a current and connected to a current summing node. Weighted currents determined by the values of previously detected bits and their respective feedback coefficients are also connected to this node. Additionally, the summed currents is integrated and converted to a voltage. A sampler is utilized to make a bit decision based on the resulting voltage. After sampling, the integrator is reset before analysis of the next bit. The necessary amplification is achieved by maximizing the sensitivity of the latch, using integration in front of the data latch.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 18, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Juan Carballo, Hayden Cranford, Gareth Nicholls, Vernon Norman, Martin Schmatz

Publication number: 20070242742Abstract: A digital communication system for transmitting and receiving video data signals and control data signals over a transmission line comprises an open-loop equalizer circuit and a control data extension circuit. The open-loop equalizer circuit is operable to receive video signals transmitted over the transmission line and output equalized video data signals. The control data extension circuit is operable to inject a boost current at the receive end of the transmission line during a positive transition in the control data signal, and clamp the receive end of the transmission line during a negative transition of the control data signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2007Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Aapoolcoyuz Biman, John Hudson, Eliyahu Zamir, Stephen Webster

Publication number: 20070242743Abstract: Device for improving in vivo penetration of molecules into cells, comprising a generator of square unipolar electric pulses, an electrode device electrically linked to the generator, and a means (8) of injecting the active agent into the tissues. The generator is adapted to generate a signal consisting of a series of square pulses at a low and constant voltage (611) in PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) mode in accordance to the form of the required pulses. The signal is used to divide a constant voltage current (631) output by a direct voltage source (530) and generate a current (641) having a required voltage (130).Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventor: Yves Scherman

Publication number: 20070242745Abstract: A method and apparatus to efficiently transmit data. The method and apparatus effectively aggregate data and transmit the data in a high-speed power line communication (PLC) network. The method of transmitting the data includes combining each of at least one or more data units transferred from an upper layer, with a field to indicate attribute information of the data unit, dividing the combined data units and fields into frame blocks of an identical size, and aggregating the divided frame blocks and transferring the aggregated frame blocks as one frame to a PHY layer. In this way, data units of a variety of types and sizes transferred from the upper layer are aggregated and transmitted as the one frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2006Publication date: October 18, 2007Applicant: Samsung Electronics Co., LTD.Inventors: Jun-hae Choi, Seung-gi Chang, Chang-yeul Kwon, Joon-hee Lee, Jun-han Lee

Publication number: 20070242746Abstract: A video signal processing section decodes encoded moving picture data. A picture adjustment section performs an adjustment process on the decoded moving picture data. A picture compression section compresses the moving picture data adjusted by the picture adjustment section. If the moving picture data divided by a compression process size includes an effective video size region and a region other than the effective video size region, the picture adjustment section performs an adjustment on a pixel outside the effective video size region using a pixel inside the effective video size region.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2007Publication date: October 18, 2007Inventors: Takehiro Kishimoto, Toshiki Tada
