Abstract: Various embodiments are described to address the need for a method and apparatus that could reduce the start-up delay for uplink data transfers in multiple-access technologies. A time-symbol threshold (551) is introduced for an uplink frame (550) in order to create a partition of the frame that includes the earlier of the available time symbols and in which any bandwidth request allocations may be placed. By placing bandwidth request allocations earlier in the uplink frame (i.e., at or before the time-symbol threshold), remote units are able to send their bandwidth requests to a scheduler sooner and thereby receive a bandwidth grant for an uplink data transfer with less delay.

  • Publication number: 20070253382
Abstract: An arrangement for providing synchronization between a number of overlapping area access points within a wireless LAN utilizes a Power over Ethernet (PoE) cable connection to transmit synchronization signals from a centralized hub/switch to each of the access points connected to the cable. The synchronization signal takes the form of a direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) signal that is coupled onto the twisted pair used to provide the low voltage PoE signal to various powered devices. At each access point, a filter is used to remove the synchronization signal from the PoE transport, allowing for the group of access points to share a common beacon signal and allow for frequency re-use among the access points. The DS-SS signal is preferable created by a combination of a baseband signal and a set of separate pseudo noise (PN) sequences defining a precision phase (“pilot tone”) signal, a time mark (superframe/beacon) signal, and a time-of-day (real-time clock) signal.

  • Publication number: 20070253385
Abstract: A base station receives loading information indicative of the loading of other base stations and determines a downlink transmission power budget as a function of the received loading factor information. The base station may decrease/increase a current power budget dedicated to downlink traffic channel segments in response to detecting an increase/decrease in loading at an adjacent base station. Thus, base stations operate in a cooperative manner reducing power output, in at least some cases, where loading at a neighboring base station increases thereby reducing the interference to the base station with the increased load. A base station can consider possible alternative transmission power levels, estimated levels of interference, and/or possible alternative data rates in making trade-off decisions regarding downlink power budget.

Abstract: In one aspect, a method for preventing data packet losses when updating of an address table that is stored in a computer of a local area network and comprises allocations of computer addresses valid in the local area network to computer addresses valid in the Internet to mail data packets is provided. Accordingly, an address allocation stored in the address table is updated after an expiration of a timer. The computer requests the computer address valid in the local area network regarding the available computer address valid in the Internet for the address allocation. The determined computer address valid in the local area network is entered into the address allocation and the marking for the address allocation is cleared. Thus, an address allocation available is kept even when the address allocation is updated, resulting in preventing data packet losses and maintaining the quality of the local area network.

Abstract: A new type of data transport service which uses a frame relay layer 2 data link connection identifier (DLCI) to select among various service types, feature sets, and/or closed user groups (CUGs). A layer 3 address may be extracted from a layer 2 frame, and the layer 3 address information may be used to route a data packet over a packet-switched network according to the service classes, feature sets, and/or CUGs selected. At the destination, the layer 3 data packet may again be enclosed in a layer 2 frame with a DLCI indicating the service classes, features sets, and/or CUGs. Because the use of conventional permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) is not required in aspects of the invention, new methods of measuring and managing network traffic are presented.

Abstract: Methods and corresponding systems for communicating data include concatenating sub-packets designated, respectively, for a first user device and a second user device to form a multiplexed data frame. A control channel message is produced to indicate that the first and second user devices have sub-packets in the multiplexed data frame. The control channel message is sent for transmission on a shared control channel, and the multiplexed data frame is sent for transmission on a data channel. The multiplexed data frame can be encoded. The shared control channel message can include a group ID and intra-group data for notifying user devices with an assigned group ID and intra-group ID. The intra-group data can include a bit mapped field having bits corresponding to the intra-group IDs.

Abstract: A block-based seeking method for Windows Media Audio (WMA) stream can be implemented in a portable electronic device with a first processor and a second processor. The first processor initially reads a WMA stream from a block-based storage device. Next, the WMA stream is transmitted to a memory of a second processor block by block. The first processor generates and transmits a block number before it transmits a block of data. Next, the second processor decodes the WMA stream packet by packet. If a discontinuous block number occurs, a desired position of the WMA stream is sought according to the discontinuous block number. Next, the second processor outputs decoded samples of the WMA stream.

Abstract: An H-ARQ system wherein the transmission of two consecutive, or sequential, blocks of information bits are considered jointly; i.e., one of the blocks of information being embedded within the other one of the blocks of information. If a retransmission for the first block is necessary, the system processes both blocks jointly. The system is provided with cross-packet coding which extends current H-ARQ schemes for point-to-point communications wherein the transmission of two consecutive block of information bits is considered jointly. If a retransmission for the first block is necessary, the system processes both blocks jointly. This allows both blocks to be decoded without errors at the receiver after the retransmission.

Abstract: A scheduler is adapted to schedule packets or other data blocks for transmission from a plurality of transmission elements in timeslots in a communication system. The scheduler determines scaled capacity measures for respective ones of the transmission elements, with each of the scaled capacity measures being scaled by a combination of a waiting time and an occupancy for a corresponding one of the transmission elements. The scheduler selects one or more of the transmission elements for scheduling in a given one of the timeslots based on the scaled capacity measures. The scheduler in an illustrative embodiment may be implemented in a network processor integrated circuit or other processing device of the communication system.
