Abstract: This invention is directed to a method for estimating and compensating for multipath errors in a pseudorandom noise ranging receiver. The method exploits the asymmetry of the correlation function and proportionately relates it to the magnitude of multipath error. In a pseudorandom noise ranging receiver, the correlation function is obtained by generating the local pseudorandom noise sequences at different programmed non-uniform phases resulting in non-uniformly spaced correlators. Numerically controlled oscillators, code generators and shift registers are programmed to determine the correlation values at non-uniformly distributed points on a correlation function. Curve fitting is undertaken to determine the code phase at which the correlation function peaks. A proportionality constant is applied to the measure of asymmetry of the correlation function to determine the multipath error in the pseudorandom noise signal. A filter is used to detect and eliminate outliers.

Abstract: A wireless multimedia communication method for improving wireless video transmission quality by using physical layer channel status information (CSI) in a video application layer. In this method, the transmitting end decides the maximum transmission rate (Rmax) of the system based on both SNR information of receiving antennas fed back from the receiving end and a bit error rate required by the system. At the same time, a hierarchical encoding method is used, in the video application layer, to divide a bit stream into a basic layer and an expansion layer. In a case of employing an FGS encoding method, the transmission is caused to start with the basic layer, and the number of bits is increased in the expansion layer just until the bit rate of the video stream has become below Rmax.

Abstract: Rate control mechanisms for video encoding aim to provide the best possible video quality while keeping given conditions on transmission rate and decoding delay. In order to achieve a constant video quality, the anchor and non-anchor frames of different frame types are encoded using a different number of bits. However, since video sequences generally contain widely varying picture content and previously coded frames are used to predict a given frame, a suitable assignment of frame target bit rates is hard to determine, especially for non-anchor frames. According to the invention, non-anchor frames are coded using a fixed quantisation parameter. Since the quantisation parameter used for the encoding of non-anchor frames is directly derived from the average quantisation parameter of the previously encoded anchor frame, such approach ensures a constant video quality.

Abstract: A system and method for on-the-fly detection of scene changes within a video stream through statistical analysis of a portion of the macroblocks comprising each video frame as they are processed using inter-frame coding. If the statistical analysis of the selected macroblocks of the current frame differs from the previous frame by exceeding predetermined thresholds, the current video frame is assumed to be a scene change. Once a scene change is detected, the remainder of the video frame is encoded as an intra-frame, intra-macroblocks, or intra slices, through implementation of one or more predetermined or adaptively adjusted quantization parameters to reduce computational complexity, decrease power consumption, and increase the resulting video image quality. As decoding is the inverse of encoding, these improvements are similarly recognized by a decoder as it decodes a resulting encoded video stream.

If a pattern is matched in a look-up table, this invention skips the CAVLD procedure and reconstructs a block directly. Before CAVLC, a step of zig-zag ordered coefficients search is conducted. If a sequence of zig-zag ordered coefficients is matched in a look-up table, a corresponding coded bit-stream can be obtained directly. The invention of formulas for enabling the parallelization of the H.264 luma blocks is noteworthy because of the diversity in the structures of the formulas for predicting the various pixels given by the H.264 standard. For example, the standard specifies fundamentally different formulas for some pixels than for others, which makes their parallelization appear impossible.

Abstract: A tuner selects a channel in a designated frequency band. An FFT circuit converts a received signal in the selected channel into a plurality of carrier signals. A carrier shift detection circuit calculates the correlation between the phase information of each carrier signal and reference phase information prepared in advance. If the correlation is larger than a given threshold, it is determined that an OFDM signal is present in the search target channel. A TMCC extraction circuit analyzes the TMCC of the received signal and determines whether or not digital broadcasts of the search target channel can be received.

Abstract: A carrier interpolation unit (a digital filter) performs interpolation processing of SP signal in the frequency domain. An IFFT circuit converts a frequency-domain signal into a time-domain signal. A delay profile generation unit generates a delay profile based on an output of the IFFT circuit. The filter control unit controls a pass band of the digital filter in accordance with the delay profile. An FFT window control unit controls a position of a window to extract a calculation range of FFT in accordance with the delay profile. When delay time of multipath is larger than the guard interval, and when the reception power of the interference wave is larger than a threshold, the pass band of the digital filter is minimized.

Abstract: A Viterbi decoding system interprets bits in received QAM constellations as many-valued parameters rather than binary valued parameters. It performs the Viterbi algorithm using these many-valued parameters to provide results superior to hard decision decoding. Rather than applying a hard 0-1 function to the QAM data, the system uses a non-stepped linear or curved transfer function to assign values to the bits. In another aspect, a system differentiates between data bits based on their estimated reliability, giving more emphasis to decoding reliable bits than unreliable bits using any of a variety of techniques. By differentiating between god and bad bits and de-emphasizing or ignoring unreliable bits, the system can provide a significant reduction in uncorrectable errors and packet loss.

Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is a technique to process signals in a communication system. In one embodiment, a plurality of signal processing units processes signals received from a plurality of antennae. The signal processor units are controlled by operational mode control signals. A channel estimator estimates channel responses using the processed signals according to an operational mode. An equalizer and combiner generates an equalized and combined signal using the received signals and the estimated channel responses. A Carrier to Interference Noise Ratio (CINR) estimator estimates CINR from the equalized and combined signal. The estimated CINR is used to generate the operational mode control signals. In another embodiment, a sub-carrier allocation controller generates sub-carrier allocation signals using an allocation base.

Abstract: Techniques for estimating signal quality in a communication system are described. Scaled errors are obtained for inphase (I) and quadrature (Q) components of detected symbols. The scaled errors are determined based on a first function having higher resolution for small errors than large errors between the detected symbols and nearest modulation symbols. The first function may be a square root function or some other function that can provide good resolution for both low and high SNRs. The scaled errors for the I and Q components are combined to obtain combined scaled errors, which are averaged to obtain an average scaled error. A signal quality estimate is then determined based on the average scaled error and in accordance with a second function having non-linearity to compensate for the first function.
