Abstract: An engine has a first cylinder group and a second cylinder group. The first cylinder group and the second cylinder group are connected to a common NOx storage reduction catalyst via their corresponding exhaust passageways and their corresponding three-way catalysts respectively. When the temperature of the NOx storage reduction catalyst is to be raised, the average air-fuel ratio of the first cylinder group is made rich, and the average air-fuel ration of the second cylinder group is made lean. At this time, in the first cylinder group, the air-fuel of two cylinders is made rich and the air-fuel ration of one cylinder is made lean, and in the second cylinder group, the air-fuel ratio of two cylinders is made lean and the air-fuel ratio of one cylinder is made rich, in accordance with an embodiment.

Abstract: A burner module for burning injected reformate mixed with engine exhaust in an exhaust pipe ahead of aftertreatment devices, comprising an exhaust flow divider that creates a localized region of exhaust flow for mixture of the reformate. The amount of reformate required to produce a burnable composition in the localized area is less than what is required in the prior art to provide the same composition over the entire cross-sectional region of the exhaust pipe. An igniter is provided within the localized region. Upon ignition of the reformate, the flow of reformate may be increased to the point of a stoichiometric mixture for the entire exhaust, to produce the maximum heat for warm up. The exhaust flow divider may comprise a divider tube mounted in the exhaust pipe or may be simply a protrusion from a wall of the exhaust pipe.

Abstract: A system for reducing oscillating movement of a boom assembly about a fore-and-aft aligned axis defined by a pivotal connection of a suspension arrangement independent of a carrier frame is provided. The system includes an accumulator, a cylinder actuator mechanically interconnected between the carrier frame and the boom assembly, and a metered orifice connected in fluid communication to restrict a fluid flow between the accumulator and the cylinder actuator. In response to rotation of the boom assembly in a first direction relative to the carrier frame, the system creates a force resisting the rotation of the boom assembly in the first direction. Thereby, the system deadens oscillating pivotal movement of the boom assembly relative to the carrier frame and exerts a biasing force to assist in returning and/or maintaining the boom assembly at a generally horizontal alignment.

Abstract: For OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion), rather than transfer huge quantities of cold water from deep in the ocean to the surface to provide a heat sink for a heat engine or for desalination, this invention provides a method of using small masses of low-boiling-point fluids to absorb heat in a heat exchanger near the ocean surface using the latent heat of evaporation and then depositing the latent heat of condensation in a deep ocean heat exchanger, using the cold seawater as a heat sink. The condensed liquid is pumped back to the ocean surface. The heat engine (turbine) and generator can be at the ocean surface, or it can be in deep ocean. By using a fluid that transfers heat by evaporation and condensation, much larger quantities of heat can be moved per kilogram of fluid than can be transferred by moving the same mass of seawater.

Abstract: Method for overcladding an optical fiber preform with a given target diameter (D0) of the final preform includes providing a primary preform to be overcladded, and successively depositing first overcladding layers by projecting and vitrifying silica particles on the primary preform moving in relative translation with a plasma torch. Each first overcladding layer has a given uniform thickness (d) and is deposited at a given, constant silica particle flow rate and at a given, constant translation speed. The method also includes the detection of a preform diameter (D1) greater than a given threshold (S) and the deposition of a final overcladding layer having the remaining required thickness (D0?D1) at a constant silica particle flow rate and at a reduced translation speed. The inventive method enables a preform to be overcladded efficiently with improved yield and high quality.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing a three-dimensional photonic crystal which consists of a material with high refractive index. To this end, a photonic crystal which consists of a polymer is first provided, through whose surface there are empty interstitial sites. As a result of introduction of a filler into the interstitial sites, a network forms there from the filler. After the removal of the polymer, cavities form in the network formed from the filler, into which the material with high refractive index is introduced, so that a structure of the material with high refractive index forms therein. After the removal of the filler, the structure of the material with high refractive index remains, which can be removed as the photonic crystal which consists of a material with high refractive index. Photonic crystals produced by the process according to the invention have complete band gaps in the region of telecommunications wavelengths.
