Abstract: The present invention relates to a control system and communications systems that make it possible to transport traffic in a connection-oriented mode using the network infrastructure (30) and hardware of a traditionally connectionless network (34). According to the invention a traditionally connectionless network is complemented with a connection-oriented control plane (37). A subset (38b) of the address space (38) that in a connectionless network is used to define destination addresses is reserved for connection-oriented transport and is used to define path labels. An advantage of the invention is that an inexpensive Ethernet infrastructure (30) can be used for implementing a connection-oriented network (35).

Abstract: A method for Layer 2 packet transmission is disclosed, wherein a corresponding relationship between packet attribute information and public MAC addresses is configured in an access device such that the access device could find a corresponding public MAC address in the corresponding relationship when receiving a packet from a user terminal, then replaces the source MAC address with the public MAC address found, and then sends the packet to a convergence layer device. A method for transmission of a Layer 2 packet without character information is also disclosed. The access device needs to obtain the packet attribute information and carry the information in the packet to be sent to the convergence layer device. An access device is also disclosed. As a result, the capacity of the VLAN and the MAC address table items needed for the convergence layer device to convert MAC addresses is greatly decreased.

Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus is provided for automatically configuring a Network Interface Device (NID). The NID enables automatic detection of communications on multiple service ports. When the NID detects communications, it configures at least one of the multiple service ports and informs the supervisory unit of the service port(s) on which communications are detected. The NID may configure at least one of the multiple service ports by disabling the multiple service ports except the service port(s) on which communications are detected. The NID may subsequently detect inactivity and re-enable automatic detection of communications. The NID may activate a timer that times when to inform the supervisory unit, to configure service ports, or to re-enable automatic detection of communications. Embodiments of the invention reduce the time and effort required to install a NID, e.g., an ONT, especially when an installer does not initially know the best service port(s) to use.

Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture improve reliability and scalability of a messaging system. In some embodiments, the system's configuration data and subscriber information are stored in a central repository of a core node, and replicated to one or more non-core nodes. Data replication may be performed in real-time or near real-time, periodically, sporadically, or otherwise. Nodes may rely on the replicated data to provide the system's subscribers and outside callers with services that do not involve updating of configuration or subscriber data. In this way, the non-core nodes may continue to process calls when the core node is unavailable. For example, the non-core nodes can route calls to the appropriate subscribers without relying on the core. As another example, die non-core nodes can take messages from callers when the core node is unavailable. The messages may be queued for posting and delivery when the core node becomes available.

Abstract: A method for translating data packets from one network protocol to another is disclosed. A set of translation templates is constructed. The translation templates are then loaded into a translation template cache. In response to a data packet from a first network arriving at a translation router, an appropriate translation template is selected from the set of translation templates within the translation template cache according to the translation context of the data packet. Next, a new header for transmission into a second network is constructed by reading header fields of the data packet from the first network along with the appropriate translation template in the translation template cache. The data payload of the data packet from the first network is subsequently removed from the header of the data packet and then appended to the constructed header of the second network. Finally, the newly constructed data packet is transmitted to the second network.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for synchronizing service data between a data store and a device using the service data. These synchronization techniques may be used with a synchronization method and device that adaptively adjust synchronization parameters, such as the synchronization interval and quantity of synchronized data, on a per-end-user basis in response to actual end-user behavior. In particular, heavy users of service data are rewarded with improved synchronization parameters, such as a combination of shorter synchronization intervals and increased synchronization data quantities, which provides closer to “direct access” performance.

Abstract: A system is disclosed for providing a first electromagnetic field and a second electromagnetic field to vibrational analysis equipment that is responsive to a difference between first and second frequencies of the first and second electromagnetic fields respectively. The system includes a non-linear crystal that may be pumped at a high repetition rate to provide a pulsed signal field at a signal field frequency and a pulsed idler field at an idler field frequency as output. The signal field provides the first electromagnetic field and the idler field provides the second electromagnetic field. The system also includes a tuning system for permitting the difference between the signal field frequency and the idler field frequency to be changed. The system also includes an output unit for providing the first and second electromagnetic fields to the vibrational analysis equipment.

Abstract: In a first embodiment, the invention makes use of a Neodymium doped YAG (Nd: YAG) gain medium placed in an optical resonant cavity formed by two mirrors. Power extraction is maximized for a specific laser cavity. In particular the concave curvature on the rod ends contributes a negative lensing component to modify the strength of the thermal lens. In a second embodiment the present invention uses an amplifier rod medium with curved ends to act as lensing elements to collect emission from the laser gain medium and/or oscillator described in the first embodiment of the invention. The combination of thermal lens and curved rod ends produces a lensing effect which allows light to be directly coupled from a laser. In addition, variation of the input pump power allows for control of the thermal lens formed within the amplifier rod.

Abstract: In a wavelength conversion laser device, a laser light source emits first wavelength light. A non-linear optical crystal converts the first wavelength light into second wavelength light. A rotational driver rotates the non-linear optical crystal so as to alter an incidence angle of the first wavelength light with respect to the non-linear optical crystal. A rotational driving controller detects a portion of an output of the second wavelength light, generates a rotational control signal of the non-linear optical crystal in accordance with a change in the output, and transmits the rotational control signal to the rotational driver. A beam location maintaining mirror retroreflects the second wavelength light, outputted from the non-linear optical crystal, along a substantially same path as that of the first wavelength light. Also, an output beam distributor guides the retroreflected second wavelength light in a desired output direction.

Some embodiments use a dichroic mirror to direct pump light to the first port and direct signal light between the first and second ports.
