Publication number: 20080052007Abstract: Classification of breast tumours into Estrogen Receptor positive and negative (ER+ and ER?) subtypes is an important distinction in the treatment of breast cancer. ER typing is frequently performed using expression profiles of genes whose expression is known to be affected by ER activity. Some tumours cannot confidently be assigned to a particular ER type based on such expression data. The present inventors have found that such “low confidence” tumours constitute a distinct biological subtype of breast tumours associated with significantly worse overall survival than high confidence tumours. Gene sets capable of distinguishing low confidence from high confidence tumours are provided, along with methods and apparatus for performing appropriate classification of breast tumours.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 1, 2004Publication date: February 28, 2008Inventors: Kun Yu, Patrick Tan

Publication number: 20080052033Abstract: An improved encoder interface system, able to track absolute position at higher encoder velocities without aliasing. The device and related apparatus, method and computer program product can perform this operation without loss of precision or accuracy. The improved encoder interface system can predict the phase angle of the signal for each sampling iteration and then measure the angular difference between the predicted phase angle and the actual phase angle to account for acceleration. The predictive capacity of the system thereby minimizes the problem of aliasing. As a result of this technique, aliasing will only occur when the acceleration of the object being observed exceeds a certain threshold that, like the Nyquist frequency, is dependent on the sampling rate of the signal acquisition component. Importantly, in most applications, this acceleration limit greatly exceeds any possible acceleration that the system will undergo.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 12, 2005Publication date: February 28, 2008Applicant: University of Virginia Patent FoundationInventor: Zachary Buckner

Publication number: 20080052037Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for estimating, refining, and using the tare mass for an item to determine and monitor item depletion. In response to detecting an initial presence of an item in the storage unit, a controller collects data about the item. The controller then searches a database for a recorded item containing the same item identification. The tare mass of the item is set equal to the refined tare mass of the recorded item retrieved from the database. The tare mass is then used to calculate a depletion threshold for the item.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2006Publication date: February 28, 2008Inventors: William Kress Bodin, Michael Lee Masterson, Stephen James Watt

Publication number: 20080052039Abstract: In methods and systems that may facilitate detecting abnormal operation in a process plant, values of a process variable are analyzed to determine whether they significantly deviate from expected values. If there is a significant deviation, an indicator may be generated. Analyzing the process variable may include, for example, utilizing a plurality of thresholds determined based on statistics of the process variable. Analyzing the process variable may also include, for example, determining whether a first number of values of the process variable are in a first region, and whether a second number of values are in a second region.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 25, 2006Publication date: February 28, 2008Applicant: FISHER-ROSEMOUNT SYSTEMS, INC.Inventors: John P. Publication number: 20080052040Abstract: In order further to improve the monitoring of technical processes, in particular still more precisely to differentiate the influences on monitoring which are caused by depreciation or wear from the external influences, there is described a method in which measurement data are detected by way of measurement channels and the measurement data of a measurement channel are processed in a plurality of time series of state values with mutually different time bases and wherein limit value ranges are ascertained in a learning phase and monitoring-related steps are triggered in a monitoring phase when limit values are exceeded. The method according to the invention is distinguished in that in the monitoring phase a good value extent in respect of the state values is calculated for a time series with an upper and a lower limit value, with the inclusion of a limit value range which is predetermined in the learning phase and a state base value of the time series, which is determined in the monitoring phase.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2007Publication date: February 28, 2008Inventor: Peter Renner

Publication number: 20080052041Abstract: A system and method for providing energy-efficient support of continuous aggregate queries in a sensor network by efficiently orchestrating the collection and transmission of data gathered by a collective set of sensors to ensure conformance to a specified QoI bound. To ensure this, the sink communicates a potentially different value of precision range or interval to each individual sensor, the sensor is adapted to only report its samples back to the sink if the sample values fall outside this specified range. An additional way to specify temporally varying precision ranges to an individual sensor or groups of sensors is provided without having to explicitly communicate the precision bounds for these different time instants. Using temporally varying precision ranges permits the exploitation of temporal correlation among the sample values recorded by an individual sensor to further reduce the need for reports from the sensors.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2007Publication date: February 28, 2008Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Archan Misra, Rajeev Shorey, Wen Hu
