    Abstract: A system and method for classifying follicular units based on the number of hairs in a follicular unit of interest comprises (i) acquiring a digital image of a body surface having a follicular unit of interest; (ii) selecting a region of interest with the digital image which contains the follicular unit; (iii) segmenting the selected image to produce a binary image wherein the binary image defines a contour of the follicular unit; (iv) calculating an outline profile of the binary image which disregards concavities in the contour; and (v) determining the number of defects in the outline profile to determine the number of hairs in the follicular unit. The system and method may also adjust for hairs which converge beneath the skin and for images which appear as a single wide hair but which are actually multiple hairs.

The step of re-aligning includes: defining a delimitation mask identifying a region on the reference image with which the at least one portion of the moving image has to be re-aligned, and a feature mask identifying a further region on the reference image within which the re-alignment is calculated, determining an optimized transformation for compensating a displacement of the moving image with respect to the reference image by optimizing a similarity measure, and transforming the at least one portion of the moving image according to the optimized transformation.

    Abstract: A system and method for processing mammographic data are described. The system includes a user input/output system adapted and configured to receive from a user a user-defined scanning protocol that identifies the laterality and view type for each mammographic film in a film case to be scanned. A storage system stores the user-defined scanning protocol for subsequent use in scanning film cases. A scanning system scans film cases and generates digitized versions of each mammographic film. A processor then assigns laterality and view types to the digitized versions of the mammographic film according to the user-defined scanning protocol. The system also receives user alterations to stored scanning protocols. The system can also re-assigns a case scanned according to one scanning protocol to another scanning protocol in response to a user's instruction to do so.

    Abstract: Methods to calibrate and display medical images with pixel values with known properties of one or more reference materials provide images which allow more accurate quantification of certain tissue properties. The images provide advantages in medical diagnosis by being standardized and independent of imaging devices or imaging techniques. The images are automatically displayed and/or filmed in optimum windows and levels. The images are calibrated with a variety of reference materials and displayed in a variety of measurement units. For example, CT images are displayed with pixel values in units of grams per cubic centimeter calibrated to a known reference which relate to but are quantitatively different from the customary Hounsfield scale based on water as the reference material. A novel more quantitative CT image display scale provides advantages in diagnosis, image recording and standardization. References with known magnetic properties imaged with MRI provide calibration and display standardization.

    Abstract: A de-blocking method smoothes pixels along a row or column that crosses a block boundary. Smoothing is performed to remove quantization or compression artifacts that appear on block edges when pixels in adjacent blocks are separately compressed. A maximum-allowed edge-pixel difference is generated from the quantization parameter QP. For each edge-crossing row or column, an edge difference is generated as half the difference between adjacent edge pixels in two blocks. This edge difference is compared to the maximum-allowed edge-pixel difference. When the edge difference is larger than the maximum-allowed edge-pixel difference, then the difference is limited to the maximum-allowed edge-pixel difference, since the pixel difference may be a real edge in the image. The limited or edge difference is then added or subtracted in decreasing amounts for several pixels in the row or column near the edge, smoothing the edge difference across several pixels, such as seven pixels.
