Abstract: A two-dimensional image formation device of the present invention is provided with a spatial light modulation element (7) for modulating light having a linear polarization and emitted from a laser light source (1), and a depolarization means (21) for depolarizing the modulated light before it is incident on an image display surface. The light having a linear polarization is used before and after incidence of irradiated light to the spatial light modulation element (7), and the linear polarization of the irradiated light is depolarized after the modulation, whereby randomly polarized light is projected on a screen (11). Thereby, speckle noise is significantly reduced, and a high-definition image can be formed.

Abstract: A system and method of aligning a micromirror array to the micromirror package and the micromirror package to a display system. One embodiment provides a method of forming and utilizing a package that exposes regions of an alignment reference plane. The device within the package is mounted on the reference plane such that the exposed regions allow precise alignment with the device in a direction perpendicular to the reference plane. Alignment surfaces formed in a display system or other system contact the reference plane at the exposed regions to position the packaged device relative to other components of the system. One embodiment of the package 400 taught has laminated layers forming the package substrate 402 and providing a precision reference plane 416 relative to the position of the micromirror device 404. An embodiment comprises a light source, an array of light modulators optically coupled to the light source, a lensed mirror optically coupled to the array, and a controller electronically coupled to the array and to the light source. The array produces images on a display plane by modulating light from the light source based on image data and the controller provides light commands to the light source and load image data into the array. The lensed mirror reflects modulated light from the array onto the display plane, the lensed mirror comprising a refractive portion and a reflective portion. The refractive portion of the lensed mirror helps to increase the light bending capability to help reduce the overall thickness of a projection display system.
