Publication number: 20080158678Abstract: The invention provides, in some aspects, devices for image acquisition that use seals (e.g., O-rings) between concentrically disposed portions of an enclosure and an optics assembly (or sub-assemblies thereof) in order to protect image acquisition components from the surrounding environment (and vice versa) while, at the same time, providing adequate friction for both adjusting and locking focus. Such devices include, in one aspect of the invention, an image capture medium (e.g., a CMOS sensor, CCD array, etc.) that is disposed within an enclosure and an optics assembly that is also disposed within that enclosure, rotatably. The optics assembly, which includes at least a lens, can have a cylindrical outer diameter along at least a portion of its length that is received within the enclosure along a length that has a corresponding cylindrical inner diameter. A first seal (e.g., an “O-ring”) is disposed between, and in contact with, the optics assembly and the enclosure, e.g., along these corresponding lengths.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 29, 2006Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: COGNEX CORPORATIONInventors: George Costigan, Steven N. Publication number: 20080158679Abstract: Imaging systems in which an undedicated optical component—-i.e., a component that would be present in the system even in the absence of image stabilization—is configured to undergo corrective motion and/or other correction of image data, and thus to function as a stabilization component. The stabilization component may be a mirror and/or a lens, and a positioner may be provided to tilt, rotate, and/or otherwise precisely adjust the position and orientation of the stabilization component to improve image resolution, compensate for platform motions, and/or improve image tracking. Because an undedicated optical component functions as the stabilization component, the stabilization occurs upstream, rather than downstream, from separation (if any) of the incoming image data into two or more beams.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 29, 2006Publication date: July 3, 2008Inventors: Clifford J. Publication number: 20080158720Abstract: Data tracks are written across a width of a tape by positioning a first head section across the tape and writing a first subset of data tracks onto the tape with a first plurality of write elements on the first head section. A second head section is positioned across the tape separately from the first head. A second subset of data tracks is written onto the tape with a second plurality of write elements on the second head section so that the second subset is interleaved with the first subset. A third head section is positioned across the tape separately from the first head and the second head. The first subset and second subsets are read with a plurality of read elements on the third head section to verify that data was correctly written onto the tape.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 3, 2007Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventor: Mark L. Publication number: 20080158721Abstract: Selection of servo signals for peak detection of timing based servo tracks of magnetic tape for lateral positioning of heads relative to the magnetic tape. Servo signals from magneto-resistive servo read head(s) reading a magnetic tape are digitized by analog to digital converter(s); digital peak measurement apparatus is configured to sense the digital converter(s), and provide positive peak values and negative peak values of the digitized servo signals; and control apparatus is configured to determine the greater of the provided positive peak values or negative peak values, and select servo signals having the greater values for a servo channel. Servo apparatus is configured to respond to the selected servo signals to control the lateral positioning of the servo read head(s).Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2008Publication date: July 3, 2008Inventors: NHAN XUAN BUI, Ernest Stewart Gale, Eiji Ogura, David Lee Swanson

Publication number: 20080158722Abstract: A disk drive uses a hybrid analog-digital acceleration feedforward control system and method for cancellation of rotational disturbances. A rotational vibration (RV) sensor is used with an analog circuit to generate an analog feedforward signal that is summed with the analog actuator control signal from the servo control processor. The analog feedforward signal is also converted to a digital feedforward signal and input to the processor. When the actuator gain deviates from its design value, the processor retrieves the appropriate actuator gain value from a lookup table. The processor uses the actuator gain value and the digital feedforward signal to calculate a modified feedforward signal, which is a fraction of the digital feedforward signal. The processor also calculates a feedback control value from the servo positioning information and a feedback controller.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 2, 2007Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: HITACHI GLOBAL STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES NETHERLANDS B.V.Inventors: Jirou Abe, Gaku Ikedo, Tetsuo Semba

Publication number: 20080158723Abstract: A magnetic disk drive apparatus includes a magnetic disk, a ramp mechanism, a pair of magnetic head sliders each having an MR read head element, and a load/unload mechanism for retracting the pair of magnetic head sliders to the ramp mechanism under unloading states and for putting the pair of magnetic head sliders back to face front and back surfaces of the magnetic disk respectively under loading states. The ramp mechanism has head resting portions and a pair of permanent magnets. The pair of magnetic head sliders respectively resting in the head resting portions in a manner to face to each other during unloaded states. The pair of permanent magnets generates a closed loop magnetic field applied to the pair of magnetic head sliders rested in the respective head resting portions. The magnetic fields applied to the respective magnetic head sliders are in opposite directions along the track width of the magnetic head sliders.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2006Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: TDK CORPORATIONInventors: Naoki OHTA, Kazuki Sato
