  • Patent number: 7420922
Abstract: A method for changing a network characteristic or capability, such as the communication rate of network segments, software version or protocol. All nodes in the network perform the change synchronously while continuing to communicate within the existing capabilities. A new configuration is downloaded to the nodes, and a manager node exchanges validation messages with the other nodes in order to verify that the nodes can be reconfigured and will be able to complete the process successfully. The manager node then sends a command message to the other nodes to execute the change. In response, the other nodes begin substantially simultaneously to communicate in accordance with the new characteristics and/or capabilities. This method helps to minimize the duration of the upgrade process, while avoiding traffic hits and minimizing abnormal operation that may occur during the upgrade.

  • Patent number: 7420923
Abstract: The present invention is related to optimizing software distribution in large communication networks (e.g. UMTS). A distribution graph including the nodes involved in the distribution spanned out by logical links assigned cost values is constructed. On basis of the distribution graph, the shortest paths from the distribution node (e.g. an OMC) to each of the other nodes (e.g. BSC, SGSN, RBS) are calculated. These paths are placed in groups of overlapping paths. The paths in each group are then ordered according to the number of nodes in each path, wherein the path with the lowest number of nodes is placed first. Then the software distribution is executed in each group, starting by loading the software from the first to the second node of the first ordered path, then the same is done for the second ordered path, and so on, but the loading between the same two nodes is not taking place more than once even if they appear as the first and the second node in more than one path.

  • Patent number: 7420925
Abstract: A first wireless LAN base station is in an active state. A second wireless LAN base station is in a power off state or a power save mode. The first wireless LAN base station and the second wireless LAN base station are disposed in the same support area. When a fault occurs in the first wireless LAN base station and a communication state of the wireless LAN deteriorates, the first wireless LAN base station detects the fault and places the second wireless LAN base station in the active state. When the first wireless LAN base station confirms that the second wireless LAN base station has been placed in the active state, the first wireless LAN base station sends setting thereof to the second wireless LAN base station. When the first wireless LAN base station confirms that the setting of the second wireless LAN base station is the same as the setting of the first wireless LAN base station, the first wireless LAN base station enters the power off state or the power save mode.

  • Patent number: 7420927
Abstract: After completion of a voice-over IP call, for example, first information representing a Layer 3 path of a packet flow of a completed call that has passed through a packet-switched network is created. Second information representing a Layer 2 path of a packet flow of the completed call is also created. One or more selected phone call detail records are retrieved, which are associated with the completed call. Thus, the likely path of a troubled call is determined, and phone call detail records associated with key points in the path are located. The first information, second information, and selected phone call detail records are provided to a user for use in evaluating one or more problems experienced in the completed call.

  • Patent number: 7420928
Abstract: The invention relates to the testing of transmission quality of transmission links in a packet network. According to the invention, the director and responder functionality are made available in a resource server of the packet network. In order to perform a quality test, a connection is set up between the resource server and at least one gateway and potentially between two gateways by a packet-oriented switching center. Test signals are transmitted by the resource server and, after being mirrored at one or two gateways, are transmitted back to the resource server. The broadcast test signals are evaluated for transmission-related reductions in quality, e.g. distortion and attenuation, and the results of this evaluation for different broadcast links are combined in order to obtain information concerning the transmission quality of individual partial links. The invention is advantageous in that it makes complicated and expensive test functions available on centralized resource servers.

  • Patent number: 7420929
Abstract: A network analyzer includes a hardware-based accounting engine that generates accurate statistics for traffic within a computer network. As the network analyzer receives packets, the accounting engine associates the network packets with respective routing prefixes, and updates flow statistics for the routing prefixes. In this manner, the accounting engine maintains accurate flow statistics for all packets received by network analyzer. The network analyzer includes a control unit that generates prefix data to control the granularity of the traffic analysis. The control unit analyzes the flow statistics maintained by the accounting engine, and adaptively updates the set of prefixes to control the granularity of the statistics. The control unit may generate the prefix data as a forwarding tree having resolution nodes. Each node may associate a network prefix with forwarding next hop data, as well as respective analysis control data to enable or disable flow analysis for the prefix.

  • Patent number: 7420933
Abstract: A method and apparatus for configuring a network interface to support a virtual private network includes storing configuration data at a server on a host computer on the provider network. It is determined without human intervention whether conditions are satisfied for sending the configuration data to a particular node at an edge of the provider network without receiving a request message from the particular node. If it is determined that conditions are satisfied, then the configuration data is sent to the particular node to cause the particular node to configure a particular interface for supporting a virtual private network over the provider network based on the configuration data. The particular node is different from the host. These techniques allow changes in configuration data to be pushed to provider edge nodes without human intervention.

  • Patent number: 7420944
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of forming a mobile network using Phased Array Antennas. Mobile nodes search for nodes with which to form a network by either transmitting low level announcement signals on a wide spoiled beam directional antenna at progressively increasing power levels, or by receiving announcement signals using a high-gain, narrow directional beam. Low power announcements are compensated for by processing gain in the receive modem. Nodes randomly decide at each step of the scan whether to transmit or receive. Two control slots in an epoch are used for neighbor discovery. The first control slot is to announce or receive an announcement, and the second control slot is used to acknowledge the receipt of an announcement packet. The neighbor discovery process uses in-band communications. The directional communications permit simultaneous links in close proximity to other links without interference.

Abstract: A routing protocol, such as the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), is extended in a manner that allows the protocol to opaquely carry routing attributes associated with an origin of a routing advertisement, e.g., a customer network of associated with a virtual private network (VPN). These attributes are carried within routing communications using a separate attribute set, and are automatically utilized when delivering the routing advertisement to other customer networks associated with the VPN. As a result, the customer networks are isolated from the routing attributes used within an intermediate network coupling the customer networks.

  • Patent number: 7420963
Abstract: A test emergency response location (ERL) is used to exercise an emergency response (ER) service. The test ERL does not have any connections to the real external PSAP or OSAN and only routes the call to synthetic phones or agents. A 911 call is intercepted and routed to an ER application to make a decision on which emergency location identification number (ELIN) to use. The ER application recognizes the call originator as a synthetic phone or agent and routes it through the test ERL. In one embodiment, the test ERL is configured so that a second synthetic phone or agent is registered as the PSAP endpoint and a third synthetic phone or agent is registered as the OSAN endpoint. In a properly functioning system, the ER application forwards the call to the second and third agents. When the second and third agents receive the calls, the system is considered to be functioning properly.

  • Patent number: 7420972
Abstract: Techniques are described to replicate multicast packets in accordance with a hierarchical data structure. For example, upon receiving a multicast packet, a packet-forwarding engine may communicate the packet to packet-forwarding engines corresponding to starting nodes of the hierarchical data structure. The packet-forwarding engines corresponding to starting nodes of the hierarchical data structure may replicate the multicast packet for local interface cards, and forward the replicated packets to the network. Furthermore, the packet-forwarding engines may replicate the packet for packet-forwarding engines corresponding to downstream nodes. In this manner, the packet replication process is distributed throughout the router decreasing the complexity of necessary replication hardware. Furthermore, the packet replication process is highly scalable resulting in a latency of one fabric hop when the number of packet-forwarding engines doubles.
