The UE (120) selectively sends a position estimate for itself to the network (100), typically along with the acknowledgment. The network (100) may initiate location processing if (1) a position estimate is not received from the UE (120) or (2) a position estimate is received from the UE (120) but the network (100) decides not to use this position estimate. In this case, the network (100) and the UE (120) perform location processing to obtain a position fix for the UE (120). However, if a position estimate is received from the UE (120) and the network (100) decides to use the position estimate, then the location processing is bypassed or short circuited.

In particular, methods for granting a mobile device access to a communications resource, e.g., the right to transmit data, associated with a group are described. User requests for the communications resource are suppressed by the corresponding mobile device, for periods during which the communications resource has been granted to another mobile device. A mobile device may store a suppressed user request so that a resource request signal may be transmitted after the communications resource has been released by the mobile device that was previously granted the resource. In this manner requests that cannot be granted are not transmitted, increasing communications efficiency as compared to systems where requests are not suppressed at the mobile devices. A priority scheme is used in some embodiments to determine whether or not a request should be suppressed while another device has been granted the communications resource.

In another technique, parameters employed to trigger the recording of diagnostic data are adaptively modified to reduce the likelihood of any unnecessary recording of such data. Preferably, both the risk-based techniques and the adaptive techniques are implemented in the same system.

The pacing rate is then increased and maintained to be above (i.e., greater than) the intrinsic cardiac rate.

The modification of requests includes intercepting SCSI messages between robot and host and translating/transforming them. At least one tape slot for each host is allocated as a virtual import/export location. When a host sends a command to move a tape between a driver or a tape slot and an import/export location, the request is modified by the LPM so that movement occurs instead between a virtual import/export slot allocated to that host. This avoids conflicts involving the import/export location resources of the library.
