Patent number: 7434387Abstract: A method of operating a power generation system involves operating a diesel engine to produce exhaust that is passed first through a combined DPF-fuel reformer and then a LNT. In response to the control signal to regenerate the LNT, fuel is injected into the exhaust at a rate that leaves the exhaust lean, whereby the injected fuel combusts in the combined DPF-reformer, warming it. There follows a rich phase in which fuel is injected into the exhaust at a rate that leaves the exhaust rich, whereby the DPF-reformer produces reformate and the LNT is regenerated. The combined DPF-reformer undergoes a regeneration that removes accumulated particulate matter with each LNT regeneration. Preferably, the DPF-reformer has a low thermal mass to facilitate heating. Preferably, the DPF-reformer includes a soot gasification catalyst, whereby a substantial amount of particulate matter is removed from the DPF-reformer during the rich phases.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2006Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: Jiyang Yan

Patent number: 7434396Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for extracting power from a buoyant source within a contained column of liquid. It is comprised of an endless chain of movable buoyant objects, a means to convert the movement of the chain into useful work and a tank filled with a constant volume column of water. The buoyant objects comprising the chain sequentially enter the bottom of the water column, move up through the column and emerge at the surface. The emerging buoyant objects leave the tank and are directed to the tank bottom were each buoyant object repeats the cycle. As the chain of buoyant objects cycle through the water column, the volume of water remains constant, with one buoyant object of the chain entering the bottom of the water column as one is exiting at the top surface. The movement of the chain is a function of the buoyancy of the buoyant objects and the movement is converted to work by any conventional means using a rotary drive or linear escapement motor.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2006Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Inventor: Welbourne McGahee

Patent number: 7434399Abstract: A supercharging pressure controller of an internal combustion engine estimates time to execute a process of bringing power supplied to an assist motor to zero based on delay characteristics of actual emission energy immediately before actual supercharging pressure reaches target supercharging pressure. The supercharging pressure controller sets a gradient of a power gradual reduction waveform in a power gradual reduction control period at a gradient for bringing the power supplied to the assist motor to zero at the estimated time. Thus, the power supplied to the assist motor gradually reduces at the predetermined gradient over time finally to zero at the estimated time. The assist motor is turned off while the actual supercharging pressure follows the target supercharging pressure, without wastefully consuming electric energy.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2006Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Denso CorporationInventor: Yuji Ishiwatari

Patent number: 7434400Abstract: A gas turbine engine. The engine is based on the use of a gas turbine driven rotor having a compression ramp traveling at a local supersonic inlet velocity (based on the combination of inlet gas velocity and tangential speed of the ramp) which compresses inlet gas against a stationary sidewall. The supersonic compressor efficiently achieves high compression ratios while utilizing a compact, stabilized gasdynamic flow path. Operated at supersonic speeds, the inlet stabilizes an oblique/normal shock system in the gasdynamic flow path formed between the rim of the rotor, the strakes, and a stationary external housing. Part load efficiency is enhanced by use of a lean pre-mix system, a pre-swirl compressor, and a bypass stream to bleed a portion of the gas after passing through the pre-swirl compressor to the combustion gas outlet. Use of a stationary low NOx combustor provides excellent emissions results.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2005Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Inventors: Shawn P. Lawlor, Mark A. Novaresi, Charles C. Patent number: 7434402Abstract: Aspects of the invention relate to a system and method for actively controlling compressor clearances in a turbine engine by passing a thermal fluid in heat exchanging relation through a compressor vane carrier. During some operational conditions, such as hot restart or spin cool, it may be desirable to heat the vane carrier to enlarge or at least prevent a decrease in compressor clearances. In such cases, a heated thermal fluid can be provided by reclaiming residual exhaust energy from a heat recovery steam generator. At any condition where improved performance is desired, such as at base load operation, the vane carrier can be cooled to minimize compressor clearances. A cooled thermal fluid can be bleed air from an upstream portion of the compressor, water-cooled high pressure bleed air from a downstream portion of the compressor, or feed water from the bottoming cycle in a combined cycle engine.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2005Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Siemens Power Generation, Inc.Inventors: Hubert Edward Paprotna, Adam Matthew Foust
