Abstract: Methods and apparatus to detect blank images in a digital video broadcast signal are disclosed. An example method of detecting a blank image includes receiving a compressed digital image including a plurality of DC values, analyzing a total number of bits in the digital image to determine if the digital image has a data size small enough to be a blank frame candidate, if the data size is small enough for the digital image to be a blank frame candidate, analyzing multiple areas of the digital image to determine if the multiple areas exhibit substantially a same complexity, if the multiple areas exhibit substantially the same complexity, determining a number of DC values in the plurality of DC values that meet a criterion, comparing the determined number of DC values meeting the criterion to a threshold, and identifying the received digital image as a blank image if the determined number of DC values exceeds the threshold.

Light for projecting a projection image onto a projection surface is output from a light source, and separated into light beams of a plurality of colors. Images corresponding to the light beams of the plurality of colors are formed on display units. The light beams of the plurality of colors having passed through the display units are synthesized and projected onto the projection surface. Fluctuations in the light quantity of the light beams of the plurality of colors having passed through the display units and yet to be input to the color synthesis unit are detected. Detection results are analyzed, and it is determined whether flicker caused by the display units or flicker caused by the light source is occurring in the projection image.

Abstract: A method for producing a light reflecting structure in a transflective or reflective liquid crystal display uses one or two masks for masking a photoresist layer in a back-side exposing process. The pattern on the masks is designed to produce rod-like structures or crevices and holes on exposed and developed photoresist layer. After the exposed photoresist is developed, a heat treatment process or a UV curing process is used to soften the photoresist layer so that the reshaped surface is more or less contiguous but uneven. A reflective coating is then deposited on the uneven surface. One or more intermediate layers can be made between the masks, between the lower mask and the substrate, and between the upper masks and the photoresist layers. The masks and the intermediate layers can be made in conjunction with the fabrication of the liquid crystal display panel.

Abstract: The present invention prevents an unrubbed portion caused by asperities formed on a surface of an alignment layer of a TFT substrate or a counter substrate. A TFT substrate is disposed on a rubbing stage and a projecting portion is formed on a surface of the TFT substrate by TFT wiring. The projecting portion on the surface causes an unrubbed portion, that is, a rubbing shadow particularly at the downstream of rubbing. In a rubbing step, two rubbing rollers that rotate in different directions are provided and the TFT substrate is rubbed in contact with the two rubbing rollers that rotate in different directions, which eliminates the influence of the rubbing shadow. Thus light leakage is prevented in black display.

Abstract: A diffractive multifocal lens is disclosed, comprising an optical element having at least one diffractive surface, the surface profile comprising a plurality of annular concentric zones. The optical thickness of the surface profile changes monotonically with radius within each zone, while a distinct step in optical thickness at the junction between adjacent zones defines a step height. The step heights for respective zones may differ from one zone to another periodically so as to tailor diffraction order efficiencies of the optical element. In one example of a trifocal lens, step heights alternate between two values, the even-numbered step heights being lower than the odd-numbered step heights.

Abstract: Implantation of an accommodating intraocular lens in an eye may require the accurate measurement of the size, circumference, or diameter of the capsular bag of the eye. A flexible ring or ring portion may be temporarily or permanently inserted into the capsular bag for measuring the circumference of the capsular bag, for example, after extraction of a natural lens from the capsular bag. The ring or ring portion is generally compressible to fit through a surgical incision, then expands to fill the capsular bag along an equatorial region. The ring or ring portion includes a central component that changes shape and/or angle as the ring or ring portion is compressed. The shape change is generally correlated to the size of the capsular bag and may be visually measured through the cornea, the measurement being generally independent of corneal magnification. The measurement may be used to determine or calculate information about the capsular bag such as its size, elasticity, accommodative range, and so forth.
