Abstract: The present invention is directed to a display device which comprises two layers of insulating substrate, at least the substrate on the viewing side is transparent, an array of display cells sandwiched between the two layers of substrate, a writing means, and optionally an erasing means to magnetically or electrically erase the image. The display cells are filled with a dispersion of magnetic particles which may be charged or non-charged. The display of the invention eliminates the use of the transparent conductor film, such as ITO, on the viewing side. Therefore, the displays of this invention are more cost effective, more flexible and durable and capable of higher image contrast ratio and higher reflectance in the Dmin area.

  • Publication number: 20110292497
Abstract: A change in loading conditions of fiber amplifiers in an optical communications network causes rapid variations in the gain profile of the amplifiers due to spectral hole burning and stimulated Raman scattering. An apparatus for reducing such gain profile variations is described which monitors optical signal perturbations and reacts by adjusting pump powers of the amplifiers and, or fast variable optical attenuator according to a pre-determined function stored in the form of constants in controller's memory. The optical signal is monitored as total power, and the power of light after passing through one or more optical filters. The light detection is relatively fast, whereby the gain profile variations are compensated by fast controlled variable optical attenuator and pump power adjustment upon the change in loading conditions.

Abstract: A vapor-permeable, vented eyecup for night vision goggles and other optical devices having an eyepiece. An eyecup is used to create a light tight seal between the eyepiece and the operator's face. In addition to containing the light from the optical device, the eyecup blocks out external light. When viewing through an optical device using a non-vented eyecup, moisture becomes trapped in the eyecup volume bounded by the operator's eye socket, eyecup, and eyepiece. Fog forms on the eyepiece as a result. This invention reduces the occurrence of fogging by allowing moisture to vent out of the volume through a vapor permeable material. This material allows vapor to pass but blocks larger water droplets, dust, dirt, and light.

Abstract: An optical lens which, in a controlled manner, and without altering either the resolution or luminous capture, helps to extend the depth of field of any other optical system. The optical lens of the present invention is composed of two optical lenses that form a pair. Each of the lenses of the pair produces a change of optical path with a symmetrical distribution. If there is no relative displacement, the lenses of the pair generate an optical path difference equal to zero. When there is relative displacement, the lenses of the pair generate a change of optical path with asymmetric distribution, which helps to extend the depth of field without reducing either the resolution or luminous capture. The optical lens of this invention, in the form of an optical pair, serves any other optical system to capture images without loss of modulation, but with attenuated modulation which can be retrieved with digital processing algorithms known in the art.

A second translational actuator is movable within the outer member and coupled to the inner member by a second shaft and is actuable to translate the inner member along a second substantially linear travel path within the translation plane. A rotational actuator is movable within the outer member and coupled to the inner member by a third shaft and actuable to rotate the inner member about an instant point of rotation that is defined at the intersection of the first and second linear travel paths.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a storage device includes a recording medium, a driving module, a head, a conductive body, a write-verify module, and a projection amount controller. A conductive body is mounted on the head, and changes a projection amount of the head by thermally expanding the head with heat from a current carried by the conductive body. The write-verify module executes a write-verify check to check whether content written in any location on the recording medium is correct when the driving module starts rotating the recording medium. The projection amount controller controls the projection amount of the head by adding a first value to a current in a steady state carried by the conductive body if the content is correct, and adding a second value with an absolute value greater than that of the first value to the current in the steady state if the content is not correct.

Abstract: A magnetic tape driving apparatus, which does not cause damage to either a magnetic head or a magnetic tape when making transition of the magnetic tape from a stopped state to a running state, when making transition of the magnetic tape from a running state to a stopped state, or when reversing the transportation direction of the magnetic tape, is provided. In a state where any one of a magnetic head and a magnetic tape moves and the other rests (i.e., a state where static friction may occur), such as at the time of starting transportation of the magnetic tape, at the time of stopping the tape in a running state, and at the time of reversing the transportation direction of the magnetic tape, a head displacing portion vibrates the magnetic head under the control by a displacement control portion, and thus no static friction occurs between the magnetic head and the magnetic tape.
