Abstract: The present invention is for a system and a method of VUV photoionization of fullerene and derivative clusters followed by their thermal effusion for a practical energy-efficient and economically-viable high thrust density ion thruster. By taking advantage of the state-of-the-art high intensity VUV photon sources, present invention is able to provide much softer ionization with minimal internal energy deposition than the ionization in the electron impact or charge exchange type ionization in plasma environment used in conventional ion thrusters. Because the invention eliminates the need of additional gas for forming discharge plasma, it permits simpler and lighter structures than the conventional fullerene thrusters with significantly enhanced propellant-usage efficiencies, thrust to power ratios, and thrust to weight ratios.

Abstract: A modular energy harvesting system. The system preferably uses an organic Rankine cycle heat engine to recover energy from relatively low-temperature heat sources. The system is both modular and scalable. The components are preferably housed within shipping containers so that they may be easily transported by sea and over land. Two or more power harvesting modules may be assembled on a single site to increase the production capacity in a scalar fashion. Each of the integrated units preferably includes an oil-less turbine and motor.

Abstract: In a steam power plant, a first cooling circuit includes a condenser for condensing steam and a first pump for pumping a first cooling fluid through the condenser in order to cool the condenser. A third cooling circuit is a closed cycle cooling circuit that utilizes a second cooling fluid for cooling down at least one component that is different from the condenser. A second cooling circuit includes a heat exchanger that thermally couples the first cooling fluid and the second cooling fluid and utilizes the first cooling fluid in the heat exchanger for cooling down the second fluid and further includes a second pump for pumping the first cooling fluid through the second cooling circuit independently from an operation of the first pump.

Abstract: A diaphragm for a steam turbine is disclosed that has at least one arc of admission. The arc of admission has a plurality of nozzles arranged about the circumference of the diaphragm and are configured to eject a working fluid at succeeding rotor blades axially-spaced from the diaphragm. The flow area of the first few nozzle vanes in the arc of admission is gradually increased along the arcuate length of the diaphragm, thereby mitigating the load impulse absorbed by each rotor blade as it enters the arc of admission. The flow area of the last few nozzle vanes in the arc of admission is gradually decreased so that each rotor blade does not suddenly go from full load impulse to zero and thereby contribute to the fatigue of the rotor blade and create unwanted noise.
