Abstract: A method is provided for facilitating cooling of an electronic component. The method includes: providing a refrigerant loop configured for refrigerant to flow through the loop; coupling a compressor in fluid communication with the loop, wherein a first portion of the loop resides upstream of a refrigerant inlet of the compressor, and a second portion resides downstream; and disposing a controllable thermoelectric array in thermal communication with the refrigerant loop. The thermoelectric array is disposed with the first portion of the refrigerant loop at least partially in thermal contact with the first side of the array, and the second portion of the loop at least partially in thermal contact with a second side of the array. The array is controlled to ensure that refrigerant in the refrigerant loop entering the compressor is in a superheated thermodynamic state.

Abstract: Methods and devices are described for the concurrent delivery of elevated pressures and low temperatures to a sample, typically but not exclusively a biological sample. A medium that expands on cooling and/or freezing is employed with a sample immersed therein, typically but not exclusively encased in a sample container. Cooling the medium lowers the temperature and applies pressure to the sample such that reduced damage to a typical biosample occurs. Relatively long-lived metastable phases are also produced, including both metastable liquids and solids, without the need for very rapid cooling steps as required in conventional achievement of such metastable phases. Preliminary test data are also presented.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for supporting a contamination detection system for determining the presence and levels of foreign particles and/or water in fluid samples, such as fuel. The apparatus may include a contamination detection system, a hollow rod, and a bypass tube. The contamination detection system may have a flush mode in which the fluid bypasses a detection monitor of the contamination detection system, flowing into the hollow rod. The contamination detection system may also have a test mode in which the fluid passes through the detection monitor, through the bypass tube and then into the hollow rod. The hollow rod may be mounted to a collection container for receiving fluid from the hollow rod. A ground wire for eliminating static build up during contamination testing may be conductively coupled with the hollow rod and may be supported on a ground wire support structure fixed to the collection container.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to systems and methods which utilize a cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) technique for measuring vapor transmission rate through a barrier film by first allowing the vapor to accumulate over a period of time after a steady state condition has been achieved. In this manner, in one embodiment, water permeation through a plastic film, even at very low permeability rates, can be accumulated over time. The accumulated water vapor is then measured and a calculation made as to permeation per unit of time. One main advantage of the accumulated method is that minimum vapor detection is limited only by the ability to produce a good seal around the edges of the plastic film in the sample cell.

Abstract: A portable, small-sized device is provided to accurately conduct a leakage test for a liquid volume meter such as a pipette. In operation, pipette P is connected to the device main body side via a tube. A command from a central processing unit causes a pump to perform a suctioning operation to depressurize the pipette P side to a predetermined pressure. Any pressure changes over a predetermined period of time are monitored by a pressure sensor. The central processing unit determines whether there is leakage from the pipette P, and displays a judgment result on a display unit. In particular, when a diaphragm pump is used as the pump, the pulsation of an air flow occurring in a suction operation is attenuated in a pressure vessel so as not to have harmful effects on either the inspection results or the pipette P side.

Abstract: A rotational viscometer contains a measuring shaft that can be rotated at a specified rotational speed, a measuring part that is carried by the measuring shaft and that can be lowered into a sample, and a detection unit for determining the angle of torsion of the measuring part relative to the driven part of the measuring shaft. Accordingly, a twistable element is inserted into the measuring shaft, preferably in the section of the measuring shaft close to a motor. The detection unit is moved along with the shaft and determines the relative twist or the angle of torsion (twist) between the shaft part located on the motor side relative to the twistable element and the shaft part located on the measuring-part side. The output signals of the detection unit are fed to an evaluation device as the basis for determining the viscosity of the sample.
