Publication number: 20130027639Abstract: A surface polymer-assisted vertically aligned (SPA-VA) liquid crystal (LC) cell has a surface alignment layer of surface localized polymer nano spikes capable of controlling the pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules and ensuring fast switching characteristics. The deposition of the polymer nanospikes as a part of the alignment layer is achieved by polymerizing a small amount of a reactive monomer in vertically aligned liquid crystal with or without an applied voltage. Due to the alignment of liquid crystal molecules by the surface alignment layers, the polymerized polymer acts as an internal surface to modify and control the field-induced reorientation of the liquid crystal molecules. The SPA-VA LC cell realizes a stable alignment and the considerable advantage of the formation of polymer spikes via UV irradiation on both substrates of the cell. Furthermore, the switch-off of a SPA-VA is fast due to the enhanced surface anchoring strength by the surface-localized polymer nano spikes.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 15, 2011Publication date: January 31, 2013Applicant: KENT STATE UNIVERSITYInventors: Liang-Chy Chien, Volodymyr Borshch, Jeoung-Yeon Hwang

Publication number: 20130027659Abstract: A method of making a pair of spectacle lenses which may reduce induced binocular vision distortions where wearer and frame metrics and a lens class are inputted into a computer program, and the computer program determines the left and right lens front curve radius in which there is a substantially linear relationship between the rate of change of lateral vergence and degree of ocular rotation and then adjusts the left and right lens front curve radius and the left and right lens centre thickness such that the lateral inter-ocular static magnification target value is between about ?3% and about +3% in the lateral plane and the stimulus to near vergence is within the wearer's vergence limits. The computer program then determines a left and right lens index of refraction and a left and right lens material and the generated lens parameters are then used to machine the spectacle lenses.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2011Publication date: January 31, 2013Inventor: Peter John SHAW
