Abstract: A network having distribution of access point loading includes access points to which mobile stations can associate themselves based upon access point beacon signal levels and loading levels for the various access points. A mobile station receives beacon signals from various access points and determines a signal strength for the received beacon signals. The mobile station also receives access point loading information from the access points. The mobile station associates with an access point based upon the access point beacon signal strengths and the access point loading information.

Abstract: The described aspects include methods and apparatus for communicating control information in a carrier aggregation configuration that uses multiple radio access technologies (RAT). A first resource assignment related to a first carrier corresponding to a first RAT can be received, as well as, a second resource assignment related to a second carrier corresponding to a second RAT. The first carrier and the second carrier are aggregated for communicating data in a wireless network. In addition, resources can be determined for communicating first RAT control data for the first RAT over an uplink carrier based at least in part on the first resource assignment. Second RAT control data can then also be communicated in containers and/or using timing for control data of the first RAT over at least a portion of the resources.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing the resilience of a network using a combination of in-band and out-of-band signaling is disclosed. The metric used in the embodiment's algorithm to determine resilience is the maximum number of protected neighbors. Nodes closer to the controller are assigned a higher weight than those further from the controller because if their connection to the network is interrupted, all their downstream nodes will be affected and disconnected. Therefore, when determining a path to the controller, switches with alternate paths to the controller are preferred. Dedicated connections using out-of-band signaling are assigned to convert unprotected nodes to protected nodes thus improving the resilience of the network.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a particular node in a shared communication network determines a current path cost in a routing topology from itself to a root node via a current parent node. The particular node also determines a respective path cost from each reachable potential parent node of the particular node to the root node via each potential parent and a respective link metric to each potential parent node. A set of acceptable parent nodes are determined from the potential parent nodes that have a respective path cost that is less than the current path cost plus an acceptable cost increase, and also have a respective link metric that is within an acceptable range. Abstract: A wireless access point (AP) has a modular architecture, where each network element module provides one or more added capabilities to the wireless AP, such as devices and/or services. The modular and mechanically interlocking structure of the wireless AP enables a network user to easily expand or otherwise modify a home wireless network in a simplified manner by physically adding or removing specific network element modules. Each network element module includes the requisite power, high-speed digital signal, and module control connections in an integrated connection port, and is already loaded with suitable software for devices included in the network module element. Consequently, the network user can expand the smart network with a desired functionality by simply plugging the desired network element module into the wireless AP, and all connection and network association procedures are carried out automatically.

Abstract: Techniques are provided to generate a transmit power plan comprising transmit powers to be used by wireless access point devices in a wireless network. A wireless network controller receives, from each of a plurality of wireless access point devices configured to provide wireless service in corresponding coverage areas to client devices, data indicating receive signal strength information with respect to signals received from others of the plurality of wireless access point devices. Overlap of coverage areas of wireless access point devices is computed from the received signal strength information. A plurality of candidate transmit power plans are generated each from a deterministic or random sequence of selections of wireless access point devices. One of the plurality of candidate transmit power plans is selected to achieve a desired amount of coverage area overlap while maximizing overall coverage by the plurality of wireless access point devices.

Abstract: In a multicast control method, when an SSID or a BSSID of a specified VAP that will be delivered to an access point AP enables a multicast control function, an AC sends to the AP a CAPWAP multicast control message that includes multicast control enabling information, so that the AP creates a multicast control table according to the CAPWAP multicast control message that includes the multicast control enabling information and performs multicast control according to the multicast control table. With the method, the AC is responsible for delivering a multicast control policy to the AP, and the AP implements multicast replication and WLAN station rights control, which relieves the multicast control and multicast replication pressure on the AC effectively, improves the utilization of the network bandwidth, and overcomes the operator's difficulties in meeting multicast service requirements in the WLAN thoroughly.
