Abstract: The present technology provides one or more methods of operating an engine in a motor vehicle. In at least one embodiment, the existence of an engine idle condition is determined. The method may also include determining whether an operator is present in the vehicle. In some embodiments, the engine operates at a performance idle speed when an engine idle condition exists and an operator is present in the vehicle. In further embodiments, the engine operates at a fuel economy idle speed when an idle condition exists and no operator is present in the vehicle. In still further embodiments, the fuel economy idle speed will be lower than the performance idle speed. The present technology anticipates engine workload and controls engine idle speeds. Based on the anticipated workloads, the present technology can reduce engine stalling while also reducing emissions and increasing fuel economy.

Abstract: A rotation angle sensor detects a rotation angle of a pedal by its first Hall IC and second Hall IC, which are disposed between two magnets and output voltages varying with magnetic flux changes. When the rotation angle of the pedal is an accelerator full-closure rotation angle or more, the first Hall IC generates a first voltage V1, which is twice as large as a second voltage V2 of the second Hall IC. When the rotation angle is less than 0°, the first Hall IC fixes the first voltage irrespective of the rotation angle. An ECU determines that the rotation angle is abnormal indicating that the pedal rotates in an accelerator closing direction beyond an accelerator full-closure position, when an output difference G1 calculated as G1=V1/2?V2 is more than a predetermined value.

Abstract: An opposed-piston engine includes a ported cylinder and a pair of pistons disposed to reciprocate in the bore of the cylinder. A combustion chamber is defined by opposing shaped piston end surfaces as the pistons approach respective top dead center (TDC) locations in the bore. At the end of scavenging, the shaped end surfaces of the pistons interact with swirl to produce turbulence in the charge air motion in the combustion chamber; the additional bulk motions include tumble. Fuel is injected into the turbulent charge air motion along a major axis, of the combustion chamber.

Abstract: A toy launch apparatus for discharging soft foam darts, the launch apparatus having a cylinder, a piston, a launch spring, a dart magazine and a dart tube. The dart tube is biased by a return spring so that after a dart discharge the dart tube is moved rearward from a launch chamber to allow the magazine to spring load a fresh dart. During a cocking cycle the dart tube moves forward and receives the dart so that loading of a second dart is blocked. The automatic withdrawal of the dart tube after discharge of a dart also allows an empty magazine to be disengaged from the launch apparatus and a freshly loaded magazine to be attached. This may be accomplished without an operator having to take any other action thereby resulting in a very quick reload.

Abstract: A crowd control projectile includes a payload carrier, an incapacitating agent inside the payload carrier, and an activating mechanism for activating the incapacitating agent. The activating mechanism includes a sensor and a timer. The timer delays the activation until a predetermined delay after the sensor senses that the projectile has been launched. Alternatively, the activating mechanism includes a receiver for receiving an activation signal after the projectile has been launched. Preferably, the projectile has the shape of a clay pigeon. A launcher of such a projectile includes a communication mechanism for transmitting a timing signal or an activation signal to the projectile and an arm for launching the projectile by direct contact. To control a crowd, the projectile is launched over the crowd by direct contact with a solid arm and the activating mechanism is used to activate the incapacitating agent when the projectile is above the crowd.
