Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus for providing a cellular subscriber with access to a WLAN are provided. They involve identifying a multimode mobile terminal, which corresponds to the subscriber and the WLAN from an access request. Based on the identification, the WLAN is authorized to provide the mobile terminal with access. The mobile terminal is then provided with access to the WLAN as a cellular subscriber and enables interoperability between the two networks. For example, the subscriber does not have to supply a credit card to pay for WLAN access directly. Instead, the subscriber pays a cellular network provider, and, in turn, the cellular network provider pays a WLAN provider for the access.

Abstract: A local oscillation generator includes a multi-phase circuit and a multiplexer. The multi-phase oscillator provides a plurality of multi-phase oscillation signals of a same frequency and different phases. The multiplexer conducts one of the multi-phase oscillation signals to an output end in different time slots to provide an output oscillation signal. The frequency of the multi-phase oscillation signals is the same as a fundamental frequency, and the frequency of the output oscillation signal is different from the fundamental frequency. Thus, the local oscillation generator provides a local oscillation signal according to the output oscillation signal such that the fundamental frequency is different from the frequency of the local oscillation signal.

Abstract: Techniques for sending sector/system information in TDM pilots using a hierarchical pilot structure are described. A base station sends multiple sets of bits for the sector/system information in multiple TDM pilots. The set of bits sent in a given TDM pilot may include bits sent in earlier TDM pilots. In one design, the base station generates a first TDM pilot based on a first set of bits, generates a second TDM pilot based on a second set of bits that includes the first set, generates a third TDM pilot based on all bits for the information, and sends the TDM pilots. A terminal performs detection to obtain a first detected value for the first TDM pilot, performs detection based on the first detected value to obtain a second detected value for the second TDM pilot, and performs detection based on the first and second detected values to obtain a third detected value for the third TDM pilot.

Abstract: The disclosure herein describes a virtual extensible local area network (VXLAN) gateway. During operation, the VXLAN gateway receives, from a physical host, an Ethernet packet destined for a virtual machine residing in a remote layer-2 network broadcast domain that is different from a local layer-2 network broadcast domain where the physical host resides. The VXLAN gateway then determines a VXLAN identifier for the received Ethernet packet. The VXLAN gateway further encapsulates the Ethernet packet with the virtual extensible local area network identifier and an Internet Protocol (IP) header, and forwards the encapsulated packet to an IP network, thereby allowing the packet to be transported to the virtual machine via the IP network and allowing the remote layer-2 network broadcast domain and the local layer-2 network broadcast domain to be part of a common layer-2 broadcast domain.

Abstract: An optical system includes a transmitter module and/or a receiver module. The transmitter module is configured to receive input data, map the input data to a set of subcarriers associated with an optical communication channel, independently apply spectral shaping to each of the subcarriers, generate input values based on the spectral shaping of each of the subcarriers, generate voltage signals based on the input values, modulate light based on the voltage signals to generate an output optical signal that includes the subcarriers, and output the output optical signal. The receiver module is configured to receive the output optical signal, convert the output optical signal to a set of voltage signals, generate digital samples based on the set of voltage signals, independently process the digital samples for each of the subcarriers, map the processed digital samples to produce output data, and output the output data.

Abstract: A frequency-doubled OPS-laser having a desired output wavelength of 532 nm is tunable about that wavelength by a temperature tuned birefringent filter (BRF). The temperature of the BRF is varied while measuring transmission of a sample of the output through a Nd:YAG crystal having an absorption peak at a wavelength of about 532.4 nm. The peak is detected as a minimum of transmission and the temperature at which that minimum occurs is recorded. From wavelength-change-versus-temperature data for the BRF a temperature is calculated at which the output wavelength has the desired value and is maintained at that value to stabilize the output wavelength.

Abstract: An optical power beam transmission systems, with a directional light transmitter and receiver. The transmitter contains an amplifying laser medium, and this together with a retroreflector in the receiver, forms a laser resonator. When lasing sets in, the receiver can extract optical power through an output coupler and convert it to electrical power. The gain medium may be a disc having a thickness substantially smaller than its lateral dimensions. The laser resonator is operated as a stable resonator to ensure safe operation. This is achieved by use of an adaptive optical element, for reducing the diameter of the energy beam impinging on the gain medium, thereby increasing the overlap between the energy beam and the gain medium. As the transmitter-receiver distance is changed, such as by movement of the receiver, the adaptive optical element focal length changes to ensure that the cavity remains within its stability zone.

The steps include depositing a passivation layer over the mesa structure, forming a contact opening in the passivation layer on the flat top of the mesa structure; and depositing a metal contact portion, with the deposited metal contact portion contacting the semiconductor structure via the contact opening. The contact opening formed through the passivation layer has a smaller area than the flat top of the mesa structure to allow for wider tolerances in alignment accuracy. The metal contact portion comprises a platinum layer between one or more gold layers to provide an effective barrier against Au diffusion into the semiconductor material.
