In some variations of the process, the oxide of titanium is present when the acicular mullite body is formed. In other variations, the oxide of titanium is applied to a previously-formed acicular mullite body. Surprisingly, the composites have coefficients of linear thermal expansion that are intermediate to those of acicular mullite and tialite alone. Some of the tialite is believed to form at grain boundaries and/or points of intersection between acicular mullite needles, rather than merely coating the needles. The presence of the titanium oxide(s) during acicular mullite formation does not significantly affect the ability to produce a highly porous network of mullite needles.

Abstract: Catalytic materials with high activity in various chemical reactions as well as high durability are described. The catalytic materials are composed of specific, hybrid combinations of inorganic/polymeric compounds containing metal nano-particles therein, and can be easily reused with negligible catalysts leaching. They are particularly useful, but not limited to, the hydrogenation of subsituted ?,? unsaturated acids or esters.

Abstract: [Problem] Many oxide-ion conductors exhibit high functionality at high temperatures due to the large weight and charge of oxide ions, and it has been difficult to achieve the functionality at low temperatures. [Solution] A perovskite oxide having hydride ion conductivity, at least 1 at % of the oxide ions (O2?) contained in a titanium-containing perovskite oxide being substituted with hydride ions (H?). This oxide, in which negatively charged hydride ions (H?) are used for the ionic conduction, has both hydride ion conductivity and electron conductivity. As a starting material, the titanium-containing perovskite oxide is kept together with a powder of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal hydride selected from LiH, CaH2, SrH2, and BaH2 in a temperature range of 300° C. or higher and lower than the melting point of the hydride in a vacuum or an inert gas atmosphere to substitute some of the oxide ions in the oxide with the hydride ions, resulting in the introduction of the hydride ions into oxygen sites.

Abstract: The present invention provides a porous cellulose gel having a high mechanical strength capable of being operated at a higher flow rate, and a method for producing the same. To a suspension liquid of cellulose particles, a crosslinking agent in an amount of from 4 to 12 times the amount of the cellulose monomer in terms of moles and an alkali in an amount of from 0.1 to 1.5 times the amount of the crosslinking agent in terms of moles are added continuously dropwise or added dividedly over a prescribed period of time, whereby flow rate characteristics of a resulting porous cellulose gel can be enhanced. According to the invention, the production efficiency of a polymer substance, such as a nucleic acid and a protein can be enhanced.

Abstract: A seed treated with a fungal/bacterial antagonist combination and a seed assembly comprising a seed and a fungal/bacterial antagonist combination. The fungal/bacterial antagonist combination comprises a Trichoderma virens fungal antagonist and a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens bacterial antagonist for controlling plant pathogens as a biocontrol agent, bio-pesticide or bio-fungicide. In preferred embodiments, the invention produces an increase in plant yield. Control of early and late season stalk and root rot caused by fungi such as Fusarium, Phythium, Phytophthora and Penicillium in tomatoes, peppers, turf grass, soybeans, sunflower, wheat and corn is achieved.
