  • Patent number: 8734132
Abstract: The present invention addresses the need for a water pump that may be constructed from inexpensive materials available even in impoverished areas. The pump uses a simple rocking motion to pump water and can pump significant amounts of water from sources that otherwise could not be reached. In a preferred embodiment, the pump comprises three concrete chambers, a pumping platform adapted to rock in a see-saw fashion, and a plurality of valves to control the flow of water. The first two chambers contain diaphragms that, as a result of rocking the pumping platform, draw liquid into the chambers and force liquid from those chambers into the third chamber. Two valves selectively permit liquid to be drawn into the first and second chambers, and prevent the liquid from exiting the chambers and returning to the source. Third and fourth valves allow liquid to flow from the first and second chambers into the third chamber, and prevent the liquid in the third chamber from flowing back into the first or second chambers.

  • Patent number: 8734139
Abstract: A fluid pump having a pump housing that includes at least one expansion joint, provides volume compensation, as needed, to adjust for changes in pressure in the pump housing. Various embodiments automatically and passively reduce static pressure in the pump housing associated with a freezing event, thereby preventing damage to the pump head. Volume compensation is achieved by employing, in each expansion joint, a dynamic seal that allows relative movement of two portions of the pump housing, and a bias that provides a selected counter-force to the movement of the housing portions. The subject pumps are particularly suited for use in automotive and other rugged applications, in which fluid pumps may experience recurring freezing events.

  • Patent number: 8734171
Abstract: A method and apparatus for modifying standard AC plugs and receptacles to flexibly furnish AC or DC power is disclosed. This can be accomplished by adding a “selector” pin between the non-ground pins used in traditional AC plugs. Alternately, an interposer can be manually applied to the plug to effect selection. Plug electronics can select AC or DC based on respective availability. A flexible power receptacle can manage AC/DC selection, regulate the supplied DC voltage and enable reversion to the AC supply if the DC supply is inadequate. Electronics within a flexible power receptacle can convert DC to AC when advantageous and can regulate the supplied voltage. Additional electronics within a flexible power plug or receptacle can enable communication.
