Abstract: Methods and systems for searching for and retrieving video content via fingerprint matching are described. In some example embodiments, the methods and systems access an index of reference fingerprints, such as quantized values associated with multiple values calculated from patches of a frame, that are associated with sequential frames of known video content. The methods and systems may receive a search query that includes a group of query fingerprints associated with sequential frames of video content presented at a client device, access the index, compare the group of query fingerprints to reference fingerprints of the index, determine that the group of query fingerprints match the reference fingerprints of the index, and identify the video content presented at the client device based on the determined match.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for processing a video stream to reduce platform power by employing a stepped and distributed pipeline process, wherein CPU-intensive processing is selectively performed. In one example case, the techniques are implemented in a user's computer system wherein initial threshold detection (image disturbance) and optionally user presence (e.g., hand image) processing components are proximate to or within the system's camera, and the camera is located in or proximate to the system's primary display. The threshold detection and/or target presence stages can be selectively disabled for a hold-off period. The hold-off period may be, for example, in the range of 50 to 1000 mSec and triggered in response to an indication that a user of the system is unlikely to be making navigational gestures or that the system is not ready to process video, thereby conserving power by avoiding processing of video frames free of navigation gestures.

Abstract: A method and a device are provided for recognizing road signs in image data. The method includes, but is not limited to segmenting an object in the image data that is a road sign for a predefined probability. A text mapped in the segmented image data is identified using a text recognition method, where this text comprises numbers and/or words and/or abbreviations and/or combinations thereof. A probability value is determined for the text being depicted on a road sign and, in case the probability value is smaller than or equal to a predefined threshold value, is selected as a potential road sign. In case the probability value is greater than the predefined threshold value, a classifier is applied to the segmented image data for recognizing the object as an actual road sign.

Abstract: A system and method for comparing digital images, such as checks images used by banks, includes receiving and processing the images to be compared, including scaling the images to a common resolution, as well as filtering them to remove spot noise, background pels, and other non-information carrying elements. One or more regions of each image are selected for comparison. The selected regions are compared to one another by subtracting the pels of one image from the other's pels. A determination is made of whether the two or more images are duplicates of one another, or depict a substantially identical subject, based on the results of the subtractions. Furthermore, the amount of filtering and scaling may be adjusted to enhance the effects of the system to take advantage of common characteristics that may be known or detected in a particular set of images to be compared.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for contrast enhancement and feature identification. In one implementation, an image processing apparatus utilizes latency coding and a spiking neuron network to encode image brightness into spike latency. The spike latency is compared to a saliency window in order to detect early responding neurons. Salient features of the image are associated with the early responding neurons. A inhibitory neuron receives salient feature indication and provides inhibitory signal to the other neurons within an area of influence of the inhibitory neuron. The inhibition signal reduces probability of responses by the other neurons to stimulus that is proximate to the feature thereby increasing contrast within the encoded data. The contrast enhancement may facilitate feature identification within the image. Feature detection may be used for example for image compression, background removal and content distribution.

Abstract: A method for converting a full color image to a monochrome image is provided, wherein the color values of pixels are decomposed in a luminance and a chrominance component. Both components are converted to a grayscale value representing an intensity of a pixel. The luminance grayscale value is in a limited range close to a light end of the available grayscale. The chrominance grayscale value is closer to the dark end of the available grayscale when the chrominance component of the color value is larger. The darkest value of the two converted values is selected for a corresponding pixel. The effect of this conversion is that colored pixels are darker than colorless pixels, which is useful to highlight parts of a monochrome image that stand out because of their color in a full color image. It is particularly useful to help color blind people recognize colored parts of an image.

Abstract: A noise estimation apparatus for calculating a noise estimation value of a frame of an image is provided. The noise estimation apparatus includes a distribution calculation unit, a variance calculation unit, a distribution curve generation module and a noise estimation unit. The distribution calculation unit generates a pixel distribution according to multiple pixel data of an ith block of the frame and multiple previous pixel data of the ith block of a previous frame. The variance calculation unit combines the pixel data and the previous pixel data to generate a variance value. The curve distribution generation module generates a curve distribution according to the variance value, and compares the pixel distribution with the curve distribution to generate a weighting value. The noise estimation unit outputs the noise estimation value according to the weighting value and the variance value corresponding to each of the blocks of the frame.

Abstract: An image processing system is described which is arranged to highlight information in image displays by selectively blurring less important areas of an image. By generating such displays comprising areas which are in focus and areas which are out of focus, a viewer's attention is preferentially drawn towards those areas of an image which appear sharp. By having a display system which is arranged to generate such images a means is provided to direct a viewer's attention towards considering the sharp areas of the image display first. Further the selective blurring portions of an image reduces rather than increases the amount of information presented to a viewer and hence reduces the likelihood that a viewer will become overloaded with information. Display systems of this type are therefore especially applicable to complex control environments as means of directing viewer's attention.
