Abstract: An elongate, preferably rigid housing having a frusto-conical shape and a method for using the same. The large diameter end of the housing is generally adapted to be contacted with the lid of a container to ensure optimal sealing, while that portion of the frusto-conical housing having a small diameter is adapted to, either directly or indirectly, receive forces. The large diameter end is preferably at least partially hollow, and further comprises an inner member adapted to be contacted with smaller lids. Optionally, the small diameter end may be further characterized by a projection extending about the longitudinal axis of the device. For example, the projection may be cylindrical or frusto-conical. The small diameter end may further be characterized by having a recessed portion adapted to receive a tool, such as a conventional paint can opener.

Abstract: A latching system is operable to prevent inadvertent total release of two straps secured by the latching system as the two straps are being latched together. The latching system includes a buckle affixed to an end of a first strap and a plurality of fixed studs affixed to a second strap to be secured to the first strap. The plurality of fixed studs successively latch with the buckle as the second strap is pulled through a first section of the buckle. One of the fixed studs will catch in the buckle even if the first strap is pulled away from the second strap before latching is completed. Latching is completed by passing the second strap through a second portion of the buckle. In one embodiment, when latching is complete, two fixed studs engage the buckle to secure the second strap to the first strap.

Abstract: A device for an exhaust system of a motor vehicle includes baffle wall, a passage, and a body having a sidewall with an exhaust conduit extending therethrough. The baffle wall has a bore in fluid communication with the exhaust conduit. The baffle wall extends from the sidewall and into the exhaust conduit for directing the flow of exhaust gas through the bore and increasing a speed of the flow of the exhaust gas. In one example approach, the method comprises: following a deceleration fuel shut-off duration, indicating degradation of the emission device based on an amount of rich products required to cause a sensor to become richer than a threshold. The amount of rich products required may be correlated to an amount of oxygen stored in the emission device. The indication of emission device degradation may be further based on air mass and temperature during delivery of the required rich products.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes an SCR system disposed on an exhaust passage and a particulate matter sensor disposed downstream of the SCR system, the particulate matter sensor for producing an output that corresponds to an amount of particulate matter deposited on an element section. A control apparatus for the internal combustion engine includes: means for detecting a condition of the element section being deposited with a urea-related substance; and means for controlling to bring a temperature of the element section to a first temperature range when the condition of being deposited with the urea-related substance is detected. The first temperature range is higher than a temperature at which the urea-related substance vaporizes and lower than a temperature at which the particulate matter burns. This prevents the urea-related substance from being deposited on an electrode of the particulate matter sensor and limits variations in an output of the particulate matter sensor.

Abstract: A wall flow type particulate filter is arranged inside the exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine where combustion is performed under an excess of oxygen. The particulate filter carries a solid acid. The solid acid has an acid strength which is higher than the acid strength of sulfurous acid and lower than the acid strength of sulfuric acid. To remove the ash from the particulate filter, ash atomization processing for rendering the state of the particulate filter a state where the exhaust gas which flows into the particulate filter is lowered in concentration of oxygen and the particulate filter is raised in temperature is temporarily performed.
