Abstract: A system for transporting an airfoil over a railroad utilizing a first railcar coupled to a second railcar. The system includes a root bracket that supports a root end of the airfoil on the first railcar, and is oriented to align a tip end of the airfoil toward the second railcar. A blade support is fixed to the second railcar and is disposed to support the airfoil along its midsection. A weight is hung from a tension member on the second railcar such that the force of gravity induces tension forces along the tension member. An urging member is disposed on the second railcar and oriented to engage the airfoil between the blade support and the tip end of the airfoil. The urging member is coupled to the tension member such that the tension forces are transferred to the urging member to induce lateral forces against the airfoil.

Abstract: A segmented nozzle ring is disclosed having a throat area between neighboring vanes that is the same for each segment which is achieved by rotation (i.e., opening or closing of the throat area) of the individual vane compounds belonging to the different segments. The resulting uniform throat area leads to a uniform exit flow angle of the nozzle and a uniform inlet flow angle of the rotor. As a result, high-cycle fatigue excitations of the rotor caused by the non-uniform flow can be eliminated, the thermodynamic efficiency of the turbine stage can be improved, and the nozzle ring need not be arranged in a fixed position relative to the gas inlet casing.

The airfoil has one or more chambers extending in a substantially chordwise direction of the airfoil. An insert has a plurality of impingement holes, and the insert is configured to be inserted within one of the chambers. The insert is configured to cool the airfoil via the plurality of impingement holes. Abstract: A variable volume induction nozzle is designed for use with a variable speed fan, where fan speed is adjusted in response to variable exhaust gas flow volume in order to conserve energy. In order to maintain a minimum exhaust discharge velocity to ensure adequate plume height, an axially-extendable, upwardly tapered flow-impinging pod within the nozzle creates a variable annular nozzle outlet opening. As opposed to a circumferentially-constricted outlet opening, the variable annular outlet produces a uniform discharge velocity profile conducive to the induction of ambient air through a windband.
